Now that the Build a Trial Mech contest for the Heavy category is over, we can talk about the future. How do you feel about the contest, should we do it again?

Lulz, it's only a waste of time if you participate... don't like it, don't participate.

The point is to showcase different capabilities. They're still a step up from what we've had so far.

they are bad mechs and still dont do what its intended to do and help people who first start the game...trying to fix a bad mech with another bad mech isnt the answer...

They should really work on picking better mech designs... I don't mean competitive type mechs... I mean they need to "upgrade" their own mech building skills just as much, to understand the various issues that their balance is causing.

That's the only real negative that came from this experience.

No matter how underwhelming you find the selected mechs there is no arguing that they are better than the current trial mechs. At least the ones built by players use Endosteel, DHS and have a better weapons loadout.

1. If you didn't make such contentious statements, I wouldn't feel the need to troll you. You are one angry young man.
2. Not much you can do about my trolling, so just sit back and enjoy the ride.

true.... ......but honestly they would be better off if you could just customize(limted) trial mechs... i mean the hole experience is building mechs and using them in combat.... go with that

what turns people off is vision modes, and heat.... while i understand this (build a trial mech program) is trying to fix the heat problem it isnt going far enough to fix it and its not expanding on one of the core reasons to play mechwarrior...building mechs.

There are a lot of opinions on how trial mechs should be built. All I know is that the ones we have been getting are terrible, due to not utilizing the capabilities of the game in its current state, and ANYTHING other than stock mechs is better. This is definitely a step in the right direction.

Let's move it forward shall we?

For all practical purposes, spamming a billion builds and having the devs choose amongst them seems like a huge time sink. How about the devs choose a top player every two weeks and task them with creating a trial build if they are willing? That way we get builds from experienced players, and they get some fame (like "Employee of the Month"). Maybe have that as a secondary prize for winning one of the weekend contests. Or a runner-up prize. Lots of ways to do it, but keep the devs busy making the game better and let the players build the mechs.

Loved the contest, lots of passionate builders so a little sour grapes when not picked is understandable. Would definitely like to see this as a recurring feature, maybe every month rolling around the weight classes. For additional flavor maybe themes could also be explored, brawler, skirmisher, support, scout.

I see it as a significant time drain for devs, would also be willing for either moderators to take over mech shortlist selection, or possibly a panel of judges reselected each month.

Assaults next please!

You couldn't build the winner mech with your limited customization.

I don't know but my core reason is to shoot things. I only fiddle with the mechlab to shoot more and stomp faster.

Didn't they settle on the gauss/twin large laser dragon? The dragon's criminally bad, but the build's fair. It didn't even do a 50/50 split of armor, or leave 43 criticals unused.

I agree the devs generally chose crapmechs, however the basic idea is still solid. voted no/yes. I am pleased that the only decently newb friendly mech did get chosen though.

can't really make a call on the success until we/the newbies play around with the trial mechs (next month?)

I don't find the mechs chosen to be badly built/designed

the dragon itself isn't bad, people who use it for brawling make it bad.

I didn't really follow this but I can't imagine anything the players coming up with not being better than the stock trial builds, so I'm all for it.
