So..what's the deal with this? Anyone? I'm running a reasonably high end gaming laptop, but still struggle to top 40fps, when I can run games like planetside 2 near maxed out at higher frame rates.. Which graphics card is MWO actually using? The crappy on-board card, or my 680m? Is there any way to tell?

GPU Monitoring software? GPU temp would also be a good indicator. Other tools include some desktop gadgets or external software. Nvidia and ATI/AMD provide native tools as well. Intel (your typical 'integrated' GPU) can usually be monitored as well but I'm unsure if they have any native software for that.

I use SpeedFan and some desktop gadgets from here to monitor my system. SpeedFan requires a lot of fiddling sometimes and is somewhat complex (to a non-power user).

how do i use your User.cfg ? How do I install it?

Personally I wouldn't mind stripping the game of all its textures, and reducing polygon count to Mechwarrior 2 levels, if that meant I could get 60 frames per second :o

Go to where MW:O is installed (default is C:\Games\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online) and open up the file marked 'user.cfg'. If it doesn't exist, create it (although it should...). Some CVARs won't work though. Unsure which ones they are.

After watching that vid and seeing the colour pallet with greatly reduced detail I now want a cell shader for MWO

Asus republic of gamers series laptops have fantastic cooling systems, and won't break the bank like an alienware will. I bought a g75 last year and it runs cool even after hours of gaming. Double fans, blows air out the back rather than bottom or side. Fans are quiet as well.

Skyrim isn't especially demanding. It runs reasonably well on iGPUs now. MWO runs passably well on my 11" ultraportable and tolerably on such ancient desktop hardware as an 8800GT. Which predates Nvidia's three digit GPU naming scheme. Which happened like five years ago. My GTX 260 ran it very well. Newegg has GTX 560 Ti's for a hundred bucks. Time to upgrade.

I have a GTX 560M in my Asus G53SX gaming laptop and I have to play MWO with the settings on the very lowest (except view distance), yet I play Bioshock Infinite, a game that literally just released, on High settings and it looks absolutely incredible. This game is so very strange to my not-so-tech-savvy self.

This game is very CPU intensive. I went from a max of 35 FPS with an AMD FX8150, to hitting the cap at 60 FPS with an i7-3770k. It never drops below 55 FPS, even when surrounded by mechs with lasers, missiles and ballistics flying everywhere. When they had removed the cap on FPS there for a few weeks, I was running anywhere from 80 - 120 FPS easily. This all with the same GPU. EVGA GTX 670 FTW 2gb.

From my experience, it's a problem with optimization for AMD cpu's. I've been an AMD guy since I started building my own machines 15 years ago. The bulldozer and pyledriver platforms were huge disappointments. I'll be sticking with Intel from now on, unless AMD does something ground breaking....

My build..a work in progress.

Thank you! I'm still working on getting rid of some legacy hardware that looks out of place. Namely the PSU and the memory. I have 4 sticks of 4GB Kingston Hyper X 2133 mhz "The Beast" memory coming in the next few days, but haven't decided what to do about the PSU yet (Probably going with an EVGA 850watt PSU). An XSPC water cooling system is getting installed this weekend.

I don't notice any crippling performance issues but this game makes my laptop run super hot to the point where even with a lapdesk it makes my legs sweat. Other games don't have this effect.

They've definitely improved it. Since closed beta my fps has almost doubled. I look forward to further improvements in the future.

a refurbished 560 ti is like 200 bucks. a new one is easily 250+. if you see them somewhere for 100 dollars then buy them all and resell them. hell a new 460 costs 150 bucks still.

You can get a 560Ti very cheap now under $200. With rebates or instant savings.

I was using a MSI GT683 before (core i5, GTX560M, 8GB RAM), I got around 30 or so FPS at medium settings (1920x1080 resolution)

now, Im using a Asus G75VW (120hz, core i7, GTX670M, 12GB RAM), at medium settings I get around 50-60 FPS (720p), at very high settings around 40+
at 1080p resolution, FPS drops by about 10-20 FPS

never liked AMD chips on laptops, they're just not that good

I went from a i7-720QM & ATi 5650M laptop to a i7 3820 & ATi 7970 desktop: Massive fps gains.

Unfortunately most laptops just aren't ment for high performance gaming :)
