Set up fee, fine. A group of guys can pool together to set up a merc corps, or maybe just the founder.

But I've got guys on a fixed income. I'm not going to leave them behind or exclude them. That's not what we founders invested in, and if you're looking to shatter your overall community by forcing people to subscribe to keep playing with their friends, that's seriously inconsiderate and bad business. My merc corp has been developing for a year now, and others have been around a decade or more. If you're going to make the game subscription based, fine, but don't call it free to play and MAKE some pay to play.

This is a despicable act, and the guy at PGI who came up with it should feel totally ashamed.

I will not 'dedicate' either my money or my time to a game that forces me to pay through the nose to access a basic game feature

I can't afford to buy MC now. I bought some to support the game I was enjoying as a sign of support and because even though it's free to play it still costs money to make. I spent over $200 on Mabinogi and Vindictus and I never play those anymore, you know what I'm fine with that because they never forced me to pay in order to be part of a community. If you want to charge me to be part of a community then I won't be buying more MC, because I won't be here.

If this was a mistake you'd better fix it fast, if it not, it was a fun month but I've been neglecting other games and should probably go back to playing them... and spending what extra money I have on them.

I will reserve judgement for an official response.

The wording of the article does not make me a happy mechwarrior at present. :)

Why not go all the way and require you to buy "Friend Bays" on your friends list for 500MC a pop so you can monetize people making friends and forming groups, thus driving away all the players who want to play a team game together. Then you'll be left with nothing but lone wolf players, which are apparently all you want in the game so that no-one calls shots, there's no focused fire, no strategy, and no reason to play the game.

Seems like the direction the game is headed, what with the complete lack of social structure and communication tools in the game. Up next, want to chat to the other players in a game? 25MC per message for <All> and 50MC per message for <Team>.

Gotta monetize people making friends somehow, right?

Let me start off by saying I am usually on the side of PGI is doing it right, and I am not one to jump on the p2w bandwagon, but something I read in the recent press releases has me thinking "perhaps PGI shouldn't do this."

Early on in closed beta I hooked up with House Jurai. A cool group of guys spanning the globe. I like playing with them, and I am sure once CW hits we will be forming a merc corp or pirate corp or whatever, but...

I don't think that we should have to have a premium account to be in a merc corp. Several of the guys I play with are strictly free players, while some of the rest of us I am sure make up for them with paint and what not.

I am not even against a setup fee or whatever, but the subscribe to play together aspect is just a bad idea I feel.

http://www.polygon.c...ild-and-faction

This is another quote from that article:

""We've identified three kinds of players," Piranha Games creative director Bryan Ekman adds. There's the lone wolf, "the guy who doesn't care about role playing, being a part of any organzational structure whatsoever."

I am a Lonewolf because I prefer to participate as a Clan player. Since the Clan I prefer, Clan Blood Spirit, is a homeworld Clan and therefore not one of the initial invading Clans, I selected "Lonewolf".

I care deeply about Roleplay AND being part of an organization, but my favorite Clan is not being portrayed in any way -- Bryan OBVIOUSLY does not know his player base as well as he thinks he does.

The hubris of PGI continues to astound me.

I personally do not like the idea of having to have a premium time account in order to join a merc corp. I find it an unnecessary burden on the player, and I find the one time set up fee for the merc corp more than enough.

With that being said though I think a better approach to it would be a Set up fee + a recurring maintenance fee (monthly/yearly ect.) to keep the merc corp active.

I'm fine with an initial setup fee for merc corps. Hell, make there be different levels of setup so that each level allows a corp to have more members or something- gotta pay for bigger dropships somehow, right? I might even be okay with requiring *the corp* to pay a monthly fee of some sort.

Not sure if agreeing with me or if happy coincidence, but either way high five best opinion having dude B-)

Kurupt let me enlighten you to something, that post right there, these are the people they where targeting as there monthly subscribers.

That is why this is a bad idea.

Ok, this is a genuine non-sarcastic basic question, do not answer it with the current topic in mind.

How are people forming a group and paying a creation fee (possible monthly subscription fee) as a group on a F2P game any different from a paying individual monthly subscriber getting with other subscribers so they can get in game and go killing things as a group?

The individual can get into the game and play with his friends for free to a point, but if they want to continue to play long term they will either create multiple accounts or pony up some cash. (looking at you WoW)

Now PGI is still saying it's a F2P game, if you want to establish a merc corps, you pay a small fee to list yourself and the friends you're creating the corps with and bid on contracts. It has not stated that you can use the lobby and group invites to play with your friends in big stompy mechs.

Without further information we should be able to assume that each player is not required to participate in a team that has bid on a contract.

We still have to see how this pans out, and hopefully they can get an official word out soon.

Is that the same soon that CW, DX11, elimination of lagshield, and all the other features we've been waiting on for many months now? Or is it a different soon?

Lulz,

I just realized that this is exactly what the White House does. They make some comment on a Friday when they think nobody is paying attention, and if it does get caught, then they have the long weekend for it to blow over.

too me, you guys just come across as whiny and cheap. $10 a month for premium is what the eluded to and that is very reasonable.

i'm tired of all the whining and especially if it's coming from people who won't contribute

forums should also be locked to premium also like most mmo's

You guys should have went with The MechSims first to build up your PR Fiasco Warchest before you keep consistently generating these levels of Mechrage.

tera.enmasse.com
www.ddo.com
sto.perfectworld.com
www.ageofconan.com
www.swtor.com

Just to name a few that have content that you pay for, but can still play for free.

I Wont play any of those either...

PROTIP: Those yellow, orange, and blue banners under peoples names? That indicates founders i.e. people who have contributed to the game.

Isnt the free to play model great?

You dont have to pay $80-100 for a new release game! Awesome right?

Get to play the game for free! Hella fun!

Options to buy things get put in, cute cosmetic things for micromega transaction prices!

What? Not selling much because the design ideas for these cosmetic things are crap and are too expensive? I know we'll raise the prices further, and slap in a small pay to win element but even it out with non-$$ bought things to cut down on the player abuse!

What? Still not selling? Hmm.... i know! How about we restrict the content that everyone is waiting for to pay to play (premium) only?? that will guarentee we get more money!

*6mths-1yr later*

Hey guys! Still not getting enough money, i have this awesome pay to win hero mech idea for when we introduce clans! Let's sell the clan mechs at $50+ a pop, and make it so they need to be repaired with clan parts after every match which u can get from heaps of grinding for free but it's much easier to just spend MC on. Hells yeah!

A one time setup fee to found a merc corps is understandable, but requiring full time premium to keep merc status would be a no go for me, so I guess I'll be keeping my lone wolf tag.
