From the recent interview on Polygon.

"We've identified three kinds of players," Piranha Games creative director Bryan Ekman adds. There's the lone wolf, "the guy who doesn't care about role playing, being a part of any organzational structure whatsoever."

What roleplaying? There's roleplaying?

I haven't seen any roleplaying in MW:O except for a few players saying "aff" and "freebirth" in team chat, before proceeding to talk about bacon and mammary glands (the b-word is censored here? Seriously?).

Are there actually people roleplaying out there?

No....just no. If you want RPG play Vampire the Masquerade or other White Wolf Products. The Division of Labor/Truce of RPGage is Battletech for warfare games and White Wolf for RPG atm.

No point in doing battletech rpg when you can die in a single hit on a single 2d6 roll. You enter one battle, roll 12, head removed- you die. End Story. WTF Kinda story is that?!

Important part really is the end of the sentence, which makes it read thus

""the guy who doesn't care about being a part of any organzational structure whatsoever."

To date there is little reason or incentive provided within the game to search out such organisations, though many do. Myself I'm not interested in doing so until I know what CW will actually be.

A story that makes a really short book?

"Once upon a time there was a MechWarrior ... *Boom headshot* and the keen MechWarrior died. The End."

BattleTech was a wargame simulation, not a RPG, think 3d chess with lasers and cannons.

MechWarrior was a RPG based on and in the BattleTech universe, where you got to play out the life of the pilot of that Mech you used in BattleTech.

MW2, HUGE role playing community.

MW3..not so much.

MW4..look around these forums and you can see the attitude that existed then, RPG..ain't that a antitank rifle er somesuch?

MWO..well..not really seen a lot of RPing going on, although I'm sure it's happening, you just can't avoid it with a MW game.

Everybody gets to be a Kerensky!

Nobody ever wants to be the pissboy.

Everyone wants to be an Urbanmech pilot though... go figure.

I think he's using a very loose definition of the word "roleplaying." He doesn't mean the ad-lib acting out of a character role. He means for those of us who have declared allegiance to any particular house or clan simply because we like the lore behind them, and/or for those of us who ever found ourselves in a nerdy argument over which House is the best/worst/good/evil/etc. Basically "roleplaying" in this context means "having anything to do with the lore at all" versus "I just want to jump in my big robot and shoot stuff LOL."

Not exactly the role playing I was thinking of when I read that. I think role warfare.

Way back, I and a few friends did a mechwarrior rpg along with some table top but mostly just role playing. It was quite a bit of fun. None of the computer games have been complex enough to truly role play a character...

Right cause in this game. When your mech is downed. You lose your whole mech. Oh wait..

I could see a group roleplaying, but over skype. Getting into the role of a mechwarrior. Using the terms of the universe and working together.

But this game really isn't designed in a way to really accommadate roleplayers. The combat is great. But until commuity warefare is implemented, there's no over arching motivation aside from trying new mechs or upgrading them, and of course wrecking mechs.

I ran into a [something I can't recall] Roshak in a match back around December, and thought he was looney on par with Monty Python's Black Knight.

Looking at this question now, I suppose it's possible that's what he was doing.

'Course that brings the total count of even "potential" roleplayers I've seen to... 1.

Little known fact:

My name is NOT Bishop Steiner.
I do not own, or operate a Battlemech in real life.
I have never served one day in the Military Black Ops units of either House Steiner or Davion.
I have not lost a leg in a botched raid against House Kurita.
I am not a freelance Black Bag specialist.
I don't have extensive estates on Port Moseby.
I am NOT a Mwchwarrior.

But I play one on Mechwarrior: Online.
