Basically if PGI sets making merc corps free to create then you have all these people taking up all the good names just for them thinking they might get around to actually getting people to join but instead end up quitting mwo for another game leaving the name to die.
Basically name squatters which will get annoying when people take up a great name and does nothing with it. There should also be a monthly payment, upkeep so to speak to keep the corps up and running whether it be mc of 20 or less cost, or a credit upkeep instead. If they cant pay the upkeep then the corps gets put back into the pool of names.
There are other great reasons i am sure for this, who else doesn't want the great yoloswag merc corps name taken just to sit idle.

the thing is we shouldn't be paying to create a merc corp or faction division, but we should be paying to make it BETTER, FLASHIER, MORE AWESOME. Like custom decals and maybe special skins, paints, and designs you can order from PGI for a price with your insignia... THEY CAN MAKE A KILLING OFF OF THAT.
I've come to the realization that a 1 time price to pay wouldn't be bad or paying a second price to increase your roster limit, but a SUBSCRIPTION to be a merc corp and maybe a house division? no, subscription gaming is going out of style.
having a "pool" of names and and upkeep sounds horrible and a bunch of players will go, "you know what? why don't we just play as lone wolves on paper and be 'The *insert sexual pun* Merc Corp' on TS and off-game, team up in a house as an 8-man and roll that way."
they still haven't told us the incentive on Merc corps and factions would get for paying up for pretty much the privilege to advertise.

I would rather they kept idle

You know name squatting is a pretty damn easy problem to solve without angering 90% of the players (again), right?
