I'm just always distraught how the crayon eaters and window lickers are the last ones to survive (and often in assault mechs). With heavily damaged enemy mechs that any player with 200-300 battles of experience wouldn't have too much trouble destroying, these crayon eaters end up putting on a humiliating display of not knowing how to counter twist, slow down and twist, minimum or maximum ranges with their often terribly balanced or mind boggling build. I mean it's like a five year old is playing, you all know what I'm talking about.

Coming across this form of torture is a 1/20 thing however.

What do you drive? And how do you play? The thing that would help most players to do better is simply patience.

People do realize that the "average" player is, by definition, average in skill level?

All this poll does is ask people how good they think they are. Which is obviously going to skew high since everyone thinks they're better than the majority of people.

If I don't do 500 damage in any of my mechs I'm disappointed. Anything above 1000 is a great game and I have a few of them a night. I'm pretty good, but as with anything I can improve.

Sounds like you need to improve your aim more than anything else. Sure you're doing a lot of damage but if you're not actually killing anybody you're not doing squat.

Naw man, he farms damage by shooting arms and legging mechs so that his stats look cool.

Oh, no no no, you see. I AM totally awesome at this game and it IS everyone else who brings me down. So nya!! Behold my skill as one of the greatest and bestest of all time because I said so and you should believe so!! Bow before my awesomeness........
Or something like that... This poll makes total sense.... (If you believe in sarcasm)

Honestly, I would say I am above average while piloting certain mechs and using certain builds while other builds I am below average. Should I say.. Situational skill....

I shout at the matchmaker because it is fun and makes other people rage at you (oh to stir the joyous kettle of rage). Times in which the matchmaker makes me wonder wtf is this thing really supposed to do and other times; eh, seems to be working ( I guess). I would have expected a majority of my games would turn out to be more "balanced" by now than they seem to be (this could also be a personal delusion).

Like a fat kid on a teeter-totter (see-saw for some of you folk) when he jumps on one side he tips the scales evenly, but when he jumps on the other side, that poor skinny kid goes flying off the other side and hilarity ensues for all.

When you are out-tonned by about 200 tons and you win.. It works... But when you are out-tonned by 200 and you lose, it has totally lost its mind and failed miserably. Or some such...

Strictly speaking, anyone with better than a 1.0 K/D is above average, while anyone with lower than a 1.0 K/D is below average. Obviously, if someone is gaining a kill, someone is also gaining a death. Total number of kills and total number of deaths in the community must be equal (barring things like suicide - which, even then, you gain both a kill and a death... fancy that).

The same also goes for Win/Loss ratio. Better than a 1.0 is above average, worse than a 1.0 is below average.

That said - the average number of games played also has a bearing on your overall performance. Having a very small number of samples (less than 50 games) skews your stats, considerably.

Further, what environment you play under is also very relevant. A bunch of guildies running together should have a much higher K/D ratio on the average than your typical PUG player - because a coordinated team is likely to lose fewer of its members and their K/D is not just a reflection of their personal accomplishments, but that of their team, as well.

Going -even- further, it also depends upon the quality of players you drop against. If, for whatever reason, the players of higher skill levels are more prevalent in play between 4PM Central and 8PM Central - all of them, being roughly equal skill, should have K/D ratios considerably lower than a player of the same (or even lower) skill who plays during times when fewer skilled players are available for matchmaking.

ELO-like systems for MWO will likely be a little wonky until community warfare kicks off, and you can start to form team/group ELO in addition to individual player ELO - which will help stabilize the system a little more and make it more relevant to how MWO works (which isn't a one-on-one match, where ELO is most applicable and relevant).

So... it's kind of funny, but if ELO is doing its job - the "best" players around shouldn't have crazy high K/D ratios, as they should be getting matched up against players who can avoid being killed by, and effectively kill them.

Also include Dunning-Kruger effect in your post, it's relevant
http://en.wikipedia....93Kruger_effect

The Ars article is about a follow up paper to the initial Dunning-Kruger research. Same results, more details.

Seems like the research really IS true. People really DO think they're slightly better than average (and if I had a dollar for every person who reads that and thinks "Oh, but I actually AM slightly better than average, it's all the other clowns who are overrating their skills" I would be slightly better off than I am now).

And just to prove that this isn't a self congratulatory kind of thing, my KDR hovers around .3, my overall WLR (since open beta stat wipe) is about .4 and my WLR since additional stats came in is around 1. So either I'm improving or you lot are getting worse :D

KD is not a good measure of skill. Is a spider pilot that swipes a MG burst across something and gets the final .01 damage a better pilot then then the spider that can put out 100-400 points of damage, cause all holy chaos in the enemy ranks, and die with only assists a bad pilot?

Last match I played last night in my SDR-5D I killed two, did over 400pts of damage, stopped a base cap against a trenchbucket, and eviscerated a Jager. Solo. Lost the match and died, but I think it was a fantastic performance. Streaks - lol. K/D went down. ELO probably went down. W/L went down.

Honestly, every tool we have to measure epeen is misleading and pushing the ruler waivers to heavier chassis and all alpha all the time.

Kill Death is the best measure of your skill with your ride. You may not be good in said ride, Me in Commandos, but I do well in Jenners or Ravens. I am a better Atlas Pilot than Awesome pilot.

I voted about average. To be honest I feel somewhat above that but how well you do depends about what mechs you drive. A lot. What skill level you have will also be affected by premading or only pubbing. I only pub. ofc.

This is the mech stats after they started tracking. Mostly m9 and stalkers but yesterday and today its been Jager time. Last weapon type for me to test and I must say ballistics is kinda fun. You can see that the jager is rather easy to drive:

What is the load out for your Jagermech DD? Your KDR is insane. Teach me your secrets!
