Only fools run more than 4 PPC's, because you are essentially just wasting tonnage on weapons you can't use.

Run 4, and then you have another 14 tons to dedicate to other weapons and/or heat sinks.. and in 3 seconds, you can fire EIGHT ppcs.

The critical number here is 4, because that will give you enough damage to one-shot mechs through the cockpit... once your damage is over 33 points though, you're not really getting anything extra out of it.

I've noticed that too. It seems 3+ PPC results in damage saturation.
