Is this JUST because i'm new

Yes.

Experience, and buying your own mech which you can change the equipment on (which you will be able to do thanks to the cadet c-bill bonus over the first 25 games totalling about 8 mil as well as any c-bills you earn for match performance) you will start to feel differently.

:edit:

Balance is good, for the most part (the main exception being ECM).

oh and welcome to the forums, if you're new then get used to being insulted like the guys above are doing, for basically nothing.
even if you weren't new they'd still do it to new guys- so don't take it personally, dealing with these types is something you must also learn. but people in-game are usually less of a festering pile

just another reason why the game needs integrated voice, a game lobby before dropping and a general chat channel

Hmm OP you should try out the Assault class. Medium and light classes requers pretty skilled pilots and effective builds. Ive started this game as heavy and too died alot, now im doind good. Might be because the mech i leveld or im better at taking cover and not doing heroic stuff.

Buuut if you are skilled and pilot the lighter classes you can stay alive much much longer than heavy or assault and often outdamage mechs larger than you.

If MWO is not your cup of tea, try Hawken. And Heavy Gear Assault is in the works (thoe it look ****)
Nice to see Mech games again on the market.

First keep in mind that this is beta, some ideas ain't perfect.

So I recommend keeping it simple. Couple lasers, couple RM's (L or S), plenty heat sink. Go for a build you can fire a lot with and get used to targeting rather than managing your heat.

Second, hold left shift while targeting to see a different way of aiming. It is your mechs arms moving. No one told me about this and I stumbled on it days into the game. My average damage per match went up by 100 easy.

It takes a LONG time to get good at this game. I've been playing for a couple of months (I can only play a few games a day due to RL) and I'm still trying to get my K/D (kill/death) ration above 1.0 (getting more kills than dying). I'm getting a little better, though.

My advice: just go have fun. Get killed in a match? Go play another one. Get a few games in and save up c-bills for a mech. Then play some more so you can upgrade it. Learn which weapons works for you. Learn which are the best upgrades. Learn which weapons and modules are useless (there are a few of those). Watch some YouTube videos of people playing and try to learn their tactics.

HAVE FUN!

"Skillcat:" is a misnomer - it takes no skill to pilot one.

In the future, get on the NGNG TS3 server and try to find a group willing to take you into a match and teach you the ropes. You will have more fun and less frustration. Despite the issues with PGI, you can have fun playing this game if you set your expectations low.

Sorry to hear about that :l and while it does take some getting used to I know exactly where you're coming from. I don't claim to be pro but I am a fairly skilled player, but it's the cheese builds you were just unlucky enough to run in to. The ballistics you saw? Dual AC 20 JagerMech most likely. The stupid amount of missiles? Probably a SRM cat boating like 6 Srm racks. Don't get too discouraged and if you want a teammate to play with, send a friend request my way and I can do a few drops with you.

Well at least the friendly posts outnumber the hate-filled ones. Yes i'm new, i understand some of you are concerned about that... As for the guy who was talking about my inexperience in TT, you're right. My grasp on that game was very limited, as my friends and i would muddle through games in a basement as best we could, and i don't think we ever did get it down... I just remember having a good time. I don't think i claimed to be a guru. I always liked reading the battletech books. Michael stackpoles Warrior series was definitely good. I used what i learned through my limited gaming, and reading through the books, to make my statements about stuff not belonging in a mechwarrior game. I guess i was being pretty presumptuous.

Everyone seems to think i'm bitching about the game or expecting to be awesome or something. I suck and i know it. I expect to suck. I am working to get better, not ragequitting. I just ran into some things that i didn't expect and asked here if they were the norm.....

Some of you guys need to relax, and not flame a post that you barely skimmed through. If you had read what i said, i don't think your reaction would be quite what it was...

And as for all the people offering help, thanks and i do appreciate it. I dropped with some guys in the NGNG teamspeak earlier today, and actually won a few matches haha.

EDIT: We mostly got bored and played WH40k instead of BT anyway.

Right on bro, I don't think that was a real post. In fact, I'm pretty sure it was shopped. I can tell from some of the pixels, and from having seen quite a few shops in my time.

Thanks for all the replies. I've got a bit better feeling about this game. I'm just irked about all the instagibbing stuff that's happened to me.

It's a sad result of the optimized custom weapons meeting unoptimized paper armor on the trials. It's rough.

Considering how much you already know about the game and your desperate attempt to mention everything everybody has been crying about on these forums I rate your trollin attempt at 3/10

yup my thoughts too, if he was a new player he would be asking why the wi-fi missile on the treb doesn't do much damage. The OP also never complained about overheating. This thread seems like a passive agressive way for someone to complain about alphastrike damage, srms (which are now fairly nerfed), and raven 3L.

You're new to the forums, huh? ;) Essentially, it's a festering snake pit where a lot of people have a burning, passionate urge to assert how they're better than you in some way. Bear that in mind at all times, or they may put you off the game.

Really, the single best piece of advice is: Stick together. Easy to say, easier to forget in the heat of the moment. Don't run off chasing lights. Don't run off to get that one last shot in. You can break that rule when you get to grips with the game, but if in doubt, stick together.

Possibly because the current trials don't have heat problems that drastically, and LRMs are like firing spitballs right now?

Sorry to say this, OP, but MWO has absolutely horrible new player experience. The trial mechs are gimped in so many ways that it's not even funny, however, you "only" need to endure this for some 25-30 matches until you get your first actual mech and outfit it with double heatsinks (which are absolutely mandatory on every mech). Try to bear with it until you get your first mech, it gets better. Still, I would not blame anyone who decides to drop the game after playing only a few matches in trial mechs because of how horrible the new player experience is.

I had already asked about the NARC missile in game. And i find a single gauge that goes up when i shoot an easy thing to manage. I will admit my first two games were nasty, but you miss the point. I'm not bitching really about anything or complaining or saying stuff is too hard. I was JUST CURIOUS if this was something that was happening because i'm new or is it pretty rampant throughout the game....

People like you are starting to make me angry, give it a rest with the "Must be trolling" comments.

On a side note, anyone got some good atlas builds for me? I want to build one like sorta like the one Ian Davion died in.

Also, i'm having a great day of games. I've just skulked in the back of the pack and hit people with missiles and it works well so far. Thanks for all the advice!
