Overkill And Big-Alphas

In MWO the only enemies right now are mechs, and so there's little to no possibility that an alpha-strike on a mech will result in overkill. If it does(headshot with 3ppc), there are not enough enemies to make such an occurrence even a slight hassle, much less a reason to run a mech with smaller alpha-strikes in exchange for more heat or ammo.
Taking on a column of small tanks, for instance, might be more efficient with 2 LRM15's rather than 2 LRM20's.
So I'm curious what you guys think,
How will 12v12 effect the size of alpha-strikes in builds?
How will the introduction of vehicles/infantry effect this?

Hopefully, this will never occur in this game.

Mech builds are by definition an exercise in min-maxing. The "alpha-strike" builds that people are complaining about are just min-maxed builds with loaded up front firepower. Accordingly I don't see anything changing when 12 vs 12 comes around.
As for vehicles/infantry - no thanks. If the AI controls them they'll be dumb things that get in the way. If players control them it will become a balancing nightmare.

"NPC Tanks, Aircraft, Infantry, and Powersuits"
I believe I am recalling correctly.

Well I'm curious what people consider an acceptable build in the light of all branding this nebulous category of "alpha-strike" builds. 2 AC20 probably qualifies but what about 2 Gauss 4 ML? What about 4 ML 3 SSRM2? What about 3 SRM6 2 LB10X? It feels strange and arbitrary which makes me suspect it.

I can see some 12 v 12 games starting out with big nasty firefights with the first 6-8 going down very quickly to a lot of overkill, and then turning into slower fights as people run out of ammo and lose weapons, etc. It probably won't happen a lot (it will be hard to actually have 12 mechs able to shoot the same target), but it probably will happen.

Given that they add virtually nothing to the game, I wouldn't bother worrying about them.

I hope that never comes to pass - there are enough issues with balancing mechs much less other kinds of vehicles.

PGI has already said they plan on adding tanks and infantry to the game, in the form of consumable modules.
They work the same way as airstrikes, except instead of aerospace fighters dropping bombs, the module calls paratroopers/airlifted tanks in, who then will hold position at an area, attacking all enemy who come in range.

I really hope they do get added personally. I'd be fine if they were a completely atmospheric addition that did zero damage, but even if they included some type of armor that could do small amounts of damage to mechs it would be neat. Would help things feel like actual war instead of just-another-shooter-match.

I know they won't do it, but I'd love to see some PVE gamemodes with limited drop weight, even just as a form of tutorial.

PVE is something they have said they want to do, but it's another thing they gave no time line for. With the shape the game is in at the moment I really doubt we will ever see any quality PVE and that's a little depressing honestly.
Playing vs AI can be a good way to get new people into a game like this and I would love to see some story added via missions.
