If you were asking for a clan 'star' i would have one all ready for you but without my pumas or summoner this is going to be hard.
For I.S. 'Mechs i would take a Longbow (if not this then a catapult) for fire support. A centurion for added protection and a little range. For my scout.... Maybe a Hussar.... Maybe a Valkyrie for some speed and range with the longevity of lazers. And to round this off i would add an Uziel for more range of its my faviorite non-clan 'Mech.
Again if this was a Star it would be more well thought out and probley more viable but for I.S. this is what i got... A long range centered lance with some mobility.

Oh and great topic by the way... Cant wait for clan invasion.

From the mechs currently available..

Raven for scouting, Centurion for anti-scout work, Catapault for fire support and a modified Cataphract for the command mech. I would want a unit that can move reasonably fast, hits very hard and can outmanouvre anything heavier than it.

I'll play!

All mechs are of the 3025 era, so...
Mechs with *'s are the lance command mechs.
Light Lance: Panther* Valkyrie, Jenner (F variant), Wolfhound.
A lance with good maneuverability and plenty of fire power. Not meant for scouting.

Scout lance: Phoenix Hawk*, Spider, Javelin, Jenner (any)
Speed and maneuver. Find the enemy, get away and fight another day.

Medium Lance: Wolverine (Marik version)*, Griffin, Shadow Hawk (Kurita version), Phoenix Hawk (Davion version)
Speed, armor, firepower, and maneuver. Hit and harass the enemy, keep tabs on them till the heavy's can get to them.

Heavy Lance: Orion*, Warhammer, Grasshopper, Thunderbolt
Firepower! Armor! *Steiner light lance*

Fire Lance: Archer*, Crusader, Catapult, Trebuchet
LRM's all over the place...

Assault Lance: Banshee (Steiner version)*, Awesome, Marauder, Hunchback
Firepower over anything else! *Steiner Medium Lance*

Now, why you ask?
Hmm... because I know how they work?

Are they perfect?
Nope. But I know how they will work for me, so...
:(

4 Commandos + Voice comms or lancemates playing in the same room.

The only weakness is if there are other teammates to coordinate with or rely upon.

WOW!!! I asked for only lance that'll work for you, and you give me a almost TWO COMPANIES' WORTH! Cool! Way to stay in the spirit of things. I was really only asking for a lance, but if anyone else has a great idea for a company or two, feel free to include them here. No pressure to do so, just IF you've got some ideas for one. It helps to know who's good at what kind of roles based on their experiences in the past. And note: there is NO truly "perfect" lance... only the one(s) that are perfect for you and your gaming style.

The perfect lance is not about the 'mechs at all. The perfect lance is about having a group that can perform the task they are given no matter how big or small efficiently as a team without letting a difference of opinion get in the way.

The derpiness of some of these responses is astounding, but haters gonna hate.

Anyways . . .

Here's my lance:

Direct Fire Support/Command: FLC-8R Falconer (3053) 75t; 11.5t armor - Gauss; ER PPC; 4 medium lasers; 150m jump; 86 kph

Ambush: NGS-4S Nightsky (3053) 50t; 9.5t armor - Hatchet; large pulse laser; 2 medium pulse lasers; 1 small pulse lasers; 180m jump; 97 kph

Scout: STH-1D Stealth (3054) 45t; 9t armor - Beagle Active Probe; MASC ; 2 medium lasers; SRM 6; Streak SRM 2; 210m jump; 119 kph (151 kph w/ MASC)

Security/Infiltration/anti-infantry: KIM-2 Komodo (3053) 45t; 7.5t armor - ECM; TAG; 2 AMS; 10 medium lasers; 150m jump; 86 kph

This is a scout/ambush lance with good mobility and some direct fire support.

Oh yeah, I'd drive the Nightsky

I like this lance but would personally have something else a bit heavier in place of the Komodo, its not that the Komodo is a bad mech its just you're high on bv and low on armour across the board. The falconer is your only ranged piece so can't recommend getting rid of that and you seem rather attached to the Nightsky (can't blame you its a fun mech) I have that stealth in my lance so would be a bit hypocritical saying drop that I like having some lrms in the lance for the ability to mine things and have swarm to split up the enemy, but it isn't a requirement. Would just suggest something a bit bigger, maybe one of the executioner variants?

*Blushes*

Well, need one more lance for a full second company, eh?

Let me see...
*Smoke fills room as I think about it*
Ah ha!

Command Lance: Cyclops*, Rifleman, Dragon, Blackjack
More of a "fill in the gap" unit, mostly used for AA. For a sit back and watch what is happening type commander.

*Whew*

4 more lances and I'd have a battalion... nope. For those, other people will have to use their own imagination.
:rolleyes:

Not a lack of understanding. I understand perfectly well that circumstances beyond one's ability to control factor into the lance's efficiency. That however, was NOT what I asked, and I tried to clarify it in a later post. What I'm trying to do is get a sense of who I might want to invite into a merc company by asking a VERY simple question... a question that so far, only one person has managed to answer (that was Cerlin, BTW). I want to know who's going to be a team player versus who's gonna be a lone wolf. Who's gonna fall in line versus who's gonna get the lance killed. By answering as many of you have, you're the ones showing a lack of understanding. Anyone's who's ever been to boot camp knows this... they weed out the lone wolves from the start, kick them straight out of boot, and work with the ones who'll obey orders. Do you understand my question now? Which role do you want to play?

You won't know that until you build the unit. When i was in the Army my Sarg esed to say "a unit is only as strong as it's weakest link",that means you take your weakest solder/unit and HELP make them better. Thats a sign of a good unit/commander.

As the topic says, what would be, in your mind, the perfect lance of I.S. mechs? Any/all weight classes, circa 3049-3055. Note: this lance has to be rather self-sufficient, i.e.it has to have both some sort of scout/spotter and also some firepower. Please try to keep things balanced. If you have a light scout mech, for example, please don't pair it up with three assault mechs, as this means the scout couldn't contribute fully to the lance in a firefight. Also, please describe what role you would fill within said lance; recon, long range support, close quarters combatant, etc.

(BTW, for you newbies out there, check this link: http://www.sarna.net...i/Company#Lance to find out more info on lances)

And remember, this is just a forum for posting ideas... what actually works within the game of MWO is something we can't yet know.

P.S. I purposefully put the date "3055" as the ending date, that's not a typo. I figured there are a few of us who will still be playing in about 5-6 years, even if that means expansion packs/new games (I've been a fan for 20 years now). I didn't want to go out too much further than that because that involves Protomechs and such, and I don't want to get into those. No Clan mechs or Solaris/experimental mechs please.

I disagree with you premise. It is not uncommon to have 3 or even fojr assults with a light/med recon mech, specifically for dedicated long range fire support lances, e.g. 4 catapults and a raven for spotting/targeting.

As soon as i read this i knew what my lance would be ( and for all you ppl dissing this thread , tell me you havent sat back and thought how you would go into battle).
ravin= scout/speed
catapult=ranged/sapport
victor=with extra AC ammo
wolverine=rover
As for what i would pilot ...well any of them but forced to pic it would be the Victor.

For a well rounded lance (of which 3 of such lances could take on most tasks), I would go for a Jenner with a heavy backstabbing load out, a Centurion for point defense, a Catapult for indirect fire support, and an Awesome in stock configuration as a Command mech.

Good direct fire, strong scout, good point defense capability, and good direct fire capability.

Yeah okay, I see your point, so long as that's what the lance is designed to DO. My premise was to try not to have three lumbering close-range assaults (like the Thug or Hatamoto-Chi) combined with a fleet-footed mech with almost zero armor or weapons (like the Locust or Hermes). All I was really trying to say was "please people, use common sense... no suicide lances!" But thanx for pointing out that, in SOME cases, a scout CAN be mated to 3 assaults for effective results.

Hunter lance (Jin-roh)

Killer lance (Orthrus)
AWS-9M)x1 (Lance leader
FLS-8K)x3
Killer lance (Kerberos)

I'd be happy to pilot anyone of the mechs in the above company as long as we had each other's backs .
