The developers of the game ...
Somehow their family never took them to the mountains in the winter.
They never lived or visited the northern states in the winter.
Also their high school science teachers failed miserably.

Because ... They do not know ... that ...
Mechs and Snow are not of equivalent temperatures.

I find it difficult to think of a Monty Python reference that could make sense here...

On Topic: Agreed.

It's a balance issue, not a reality issue.

Luckily since they nerfed IR at range, there is no need to make it suck up close. For this reason, balance and reality agree.

They can call it "balance vision" then.

If you can not balance without making snow the same temperature as a mech you are doing it VERY wrong.

Or maybe ambient temperature effects the outside of vehicles? Lets look at a few examples.

A mech at low heat levels is not going to shine like a beacon in the night against any terrain.

Devs already responded to another thread about this, the vision mode just isn't complete yet. Not all map objects/surfaces have been tagged to show up properly in the new thermal.

why does thermal have a range cutoff (fog) now??

yes the environment could affect mechs, but snow should still be dark gray. not "hot" white.

mechs that are hot right now don't shine brighter much. if at all.

i think what they did is make a combined thermal + nightvision mode, and this is what we got right now, that explains the white snow, but in fact it's pretty bad and should go back to being thermal only

The motors are hot. the parts that look the same as the snow are the same temp as the snow.
Mechs have fusing reactors. They make a lot of heat.
In fact they have these things all over their chassis to dump that heat to the outside world.
These are called heat sinks. The heat sinks on a mech would glow whiter than the body panels separated from the engine by air.
So ... Still ... I am right.

Since they have stated fairly specifically in what instances they want the vision modes to be useful, and have adjusted them towards that goal, I'm not sure I see the point of this discussion.

I don't think anyone disagrees with the OP's point.

Yes your right working in better environment heat information is one of the changes that needs more work, essentially there isn't enough of this information in the maps currently and I'll be working with art to get the correct tagging in to ensure everything looks right in a future patch.

Because it made it incredibly easy to see mechs all the way across the map - making the other vision modes more or less irrelevant and the most competitive people spent the vast majority of their time in thermal vision.

The devs have made it fairly clear that the MWO vision modes are not attempting to mimic reality, rather to provide different tools that can be useful at different times. This requires designing in balance that may or may not exist in reality.
