Now there is a thing i hate in this game, and its not the game itself its the people. People that think they know everything and HOW to play a game, but when they are dead.

Now i am not that great of a player, i can hold my own, and i make mistakes sometimes, but when i am the last one standing for our team. I DO NOT like when people tell me how my weapons work, or the range of them when i am trying to stay alive, and frankly i find it very distracting and annoying.

my biggest wish that happens soon is that we have an option to shut the chat off, because i am getting real sick and tired of the backseat drivers.

"Stalker killed me at E6. It's a PPC boat." = I like you, keep it up.

"Hey maybe you should target the armored fast mech before you core the nearly dead slow mech"* = stahp.

*Actual advice I had the pleasure of receiving earlier today.

Depends on what you are doing, because sometimes people get so caught up in the fight, they don't stop to think "I can kill this guy now and lose to the dude capping us, or I can disengage and chase off the capping mech."

Half the time when there are people yelling at you in chat, there's usually a good reason for it.

Also we reserve the right to tell you to turn off night vision/thermal in Caustic Valley.

So people should keep quiet even if they see other pilots firing their out of range weapons? Some people are new and will continue to make those mistakes unless they are told. A couple of rounds ago the last surviving spider was dueling their last nearly untouched catapract with streaks when we have 4 of the cap points and sitting on 700pts. The pilot was probably so focused and didn't realise he is the only one left. I don't see a problem with it unless its a "hey stupid, do ___"

I'm not going to tell you you're doing it wrong if you're shooting a target with your medium lasers at 350m, but if you're firing SSRM at a target 500m away or dumb firing your LRM without lock/at 50m I'm probably going to assume you're a new player and simply don't know what you're doing.

That being said, even if you're not a new player I'll probably back seat pilot if:
You're in an Atlas and you keep turning in the same direction as a light mech circling you so that you never end up facing them.

You're shooting at a disconnected player whilst your ally is getting his face shot in by the Cataphract right next to it.

You're the last mech standing with all points capped at 650 points and you decide it'd be a good idea to try to take on three assaults in a half dead Jenner.

You're shooting at the center torso of a Stalker with stripped leg armor.

Sometimes it's hard to tell if it's a new player or not especially when they are making some bad decisions. Having said that I guess it can be annoying while you are doing your best .. but normally if I am fighting for my life I barely notice the chat window anyway.

So in short, just ignore it.

All very valid points written above to consider here OP.
At the same time, if you are an experienced pilot and you know what you are doing on the battlefield, it doesnt hurt to look at your chat just to see if there is something you may not be aware of. As the examples others have written out.
Otherwise, ignore them....you know what you are doing.

to someone here: (not the OP) -

no offense but you should heed all advice, and i mean it in the friendliest possible manner;
today you (and a jager) chased a stalker down a 10 story cliff without any way of going back, and took time to cap, in an atlas no less; leaving your team to fend for themselves, at that point it was 6v7 with a heavy tonnage difference.

tip #1 if the enemy drops a cliff just let him go and focus on the other guys pummeling your team, you can leave him for last, he's got no way of coming back quickly

then you crawled back through the only possible but long route to fight both a pretty baby and a dragon with gauss, and you showed your back to the gauss. trying to kill the PB.

tip#2 whenever you hear that sound of gauss, kill the arm holding it; the pretty baby's got some missiles but those are nerfed.
also - the dragon is less armored.

you're a good brawler but tactics win the match

and yeah i was yelling from the backseat, what would you have me do? i sticked by the group and tried to shake the mechs off my allies; you got separated for no good reason.
if i had dropped that cliff i assure you i would have been the last guy standing but that doesn't mean much when it's 4 vs 2

and please don't take it as a personal attack, if anything is constructive criticism available to all. not just you;
i am sorry if this makes you upset, not my intention

in a game like this, where communication barely works as is, removing the chat, our only source of communication is an average idea at best. When it comes to back seat drivers, sometimes its helpful sometimes its not depends on the advice. Some people are stuck up and will behave like they know everything and try to drive your mech for you. Others will do the same in reverse and refuse to listen to any advice at all. Both can be annoying. just ignore advice you don't deem helpful

I have lost hard-fought matches because the last player was busy picking his nose rather than finishing off the last two badly injured mechs trying to cap our base in his still relatively unhurt mech. I reserve the right to shout at you if you're going to cost us a game we have no business losing.

Other than that, I try to help pilots who are making mistakes while I'm dead. If you're setting off LRMs at 90 meters, or ignoring your gauss rifle to fire at that Atlas 700m away with your medium lasers, I'm going to poke you to not do that.

I've got $10 that says someone told you the exact thing to do to secure a win and you did something else and that person berated you for not listening, leading to this topic. Well, he may have been wrong, but if he was correct, then he just reaffirmed (to himself and everyone else paying attention) the usefulness and importance of competence advice.

Buck up pal. One day it will be you telling that greedy ******* in the 3L to just finish up the cap instead of trying to solo the brawler atlas.

There is a huge difference between helpful advice and yelling "YOU SUCK!" (which coming from people who are dead, I've always found highly ironic). Many backseat drivers are unaware of the difference. I would like the option to ignore the latter half of these people, or better yet the option to press a key which allows me to stab them in the face.

Here is some solid evidence that pugging is going to get worse when they allow people to disable chat.

Some time ago, it was me in a badly damaged Stalker, and a missile catapult, against a healthy (can't remember what mech it was). I tanked him for the longest, time, torso twisting until literally all I had was a torso... and the entire time, the missile boat launched literally all of his missiles at the enemy mech from about 150 meters away. I really, really wish some of my teammates had told him to back up.

Some people are new at this game, and don't bother to learn how little things like minimum and maximum ranges work. If i see someone sitting back and sniping with their medium lasers from 650 meters away, I'm going to tell them what's going on.

Dead players should keep quiet. Period. They're dead.

Honestly, I'm sort of happy this isn't in. I will totally accept bad advice and angry chat messages if it means that everyone is guaranteed to at least see it when someone posts "fast to kappa, slow to eps."
