If they actually mention 'experimental' non-canonic variant of mech that has already 2 unique, canonic ones that fit the timeline (HOP-4B & HOP-4C, courtesy of sarna.net) it means that something is afoot.
Or they are simply trolling us.
Nope, just the original artwork is ugly.
Sorry, but the Hoplite-4D is the primary model that Sarna is describing.
From Sarna:
Armament
Refitted by the Dragoons after the Inner Sphere's recovery of the Helm Memory Core, the HOP-4D Hoplite is armed with an impressive Mydron Excel LB-X Autocannon/10, which allows it to fire either standard rounds or cluster rounds, which are similar to the blast from a shotgun, only on a 'Mech scale. As a secondary weapon, the Hoplite carries a Conan/5 LRM-5 launcher, which also allows it to keep the enemy at long ranges. Carrying two tons of autocannon ammunition, one more than the 4C, and one ton of missiles reloads forces the design to remain close to supply lines.

Sarna lists 4D as the standard, so I don't know what's so non-canonic about it.
Edit:
Noooo, I spent too long correcting a typo and got beat to the post by seconds!
If this mech was introduced, I'd love to hear people complain about the OP shape when trying to shoot it head-on... but rarely, if ever, does the ISN have anything to do with upcoming game features.

in the Inner Sphere was destroyed during the Amaris Crisis and the early Succession Wars, Aleksandr Kerensky's SLDF exiles found the simple and rugged design ideal for bolstering their forces in the months prior to the Exodus Civil War. Selected by the Wolf's Dragoons in the belief that the ancient design wouldn't arouse undue attention, it had the complete opposite effect, and only raised more questions as to the Dragoons' origins when they arrived in 3005. After the mercenaries cut ties with the Clan Homeworlds in 3020, they also lost access to replacement Hoplites, with attrition bringing the design close to extinction by the Jihad.
Noone in the IS produces them. Clan Hell's Horses does produce the HOP-4Cb. The ISN only says that the Wolf Dragoons is tested the a HOP-4D with a new weapon load out. ( LB-X Autocannon/10 and a LRM-5 )
ssm is correct the other two variants that may available at this time is the HOP-4B & HOP-4C.
Is this an insight into what Mech may be announced in the future, or, is it a look at what Mech may be announced as a second line Mech for the Clans, or, is it a post to get us to talk about something other than CW and the when Clan info will be released?

I've been hearing rumors that this is far from the most exciting new mech the Dragoon are field testing, though my source wouldn't divulge anymore info other then to say, "They're out of this sphere!"

PS: the Hoplite could look very cool, specially in the hands of Alex Iglesias. It reminds the King Crab.
