well, two things.
First: It's at night and very limited visibility situations. If we had a "make it optimum visibility conditions" button, there would be no need for weather, day/night, etc.
Second: What we have now is superior to what we had before. The last version was grainy in both varieties and only improved your vision marginally. You didn't have that much of a gain over river city night or frozen city. Now, it's almost like turning on proper lighting, but without any color. I hated having to fight with the previous version, but what we got now is getting closer to that "make it optimum lighting conditions" button I was mentioning earlier.

From someone who was a combat vehicle crewman during war: thermal view is horrible.
