Hi,

I've played about fifty games and I'm enjoying it so far. I like my Jenner 7F,
but I really like the idea of running around in a Raven and spotting for other mechs.

Is this a playstyle which a) can be enjoyable and :P works / is useful to the team? Which components would you recommend?

Thanks!

well i just made the leap long time Jenner D lover here
i got the 3L been playing jenner that long i needed a holiday :P

yes get the 3L its soooo stress free lol

go for the XL285 as an engine upgrade allows you to put enough DHS to stay cool
also to max armor out, with a full loadout of
ECM.
3 medium laser
2x streaks with 2 ton of ammo.

You can do that in a Jenner, too. If I were you, I'd purchase the other two Jenner variants and unlock the pilot skills. You can then sell the two that you don't want and pick up a new chassis to try out.

Thanks all,

I was specifically wondering about TAG and Narc..is it useful to carry and use them as a primary role if you're not a missile boat yourself?

That can happen. A spider would be better if you're looking to spot. Easier to get in and get out. That said... I do believe the playstyle can be enjoyable, but it is not easy to sneak.

Ravens are a very important thing to study on. People assume because Ravens are light mechs, they should be treated like scouts. This is not true. The Ravens 2x and 4x are combat escorts for command lances (any group of slow, heavy mechs), as well as artillery (for now LRM [Long Range Missile]) spotters. They are very poor scouts due to the limitation of the 245 engine (limits them to 120 top speed). However the Raven 3-L can have up to a 295 engine and is much faster (150+ top speed). With its ECM, it is supposed to either cloak allies, or run up to enemy LRM mechs and jam them so that they cannot lock on to allies. People use the Raven 3-L as a hit-and-run harassment mech.

The Ravens 2x and 4x can be good for spotting. It is very important to keep them as heavy hitters whenever possible. There are many great builds, however I personally use my 4x as an 80 kph AC-20 Raven with jump-jets and 4 tons of ammo. My 2x uses twin (standard) PPCs and a tag. I can spot for LRM users although I really use it to find out if I can hit my target before I reveal my position by firing. I fire my PPCs in chainfire so I have a chance to correct my aim should I miss.

The "cheese" build for Raven 3-Ls is to run twin Streak SRM-2s and 3 medium lasers in the "Craven" rig. I run a few rigs but the most devastating had been twin SRM-6 with two Medium Lasers. I ditched the third medium laser for extra SRM ammo. XL 295 engine. Max out armor as much as possible. My favorite rig, however, is twin flamers with SRMs.

Now, let's see.

Raven 3-L spotting, disrupting LRMs, and destroying base defenses as part of a 4 man group.

AC-20 Raven pair Escorting a specific mech.

AC-20 Raven acting solo within a lance.

Raven 2x PPC rig: This is a full 16 player match with Zhizhu Mercenary Corporation versus Zhizhu Mercenary Corporation. From the start to hear how we picked our teams. Skip to 5:00 to get to the match, skip to 7:14 for the start of the action where I start to get my rear handed to me, and about 11:30 for when my shots do more than kill assists.

With that, good luck, and I leave you with why people hate Raven 3-Ls.

---------------

To your tag/narc question: You can. They are very handy. However until we hear more about LRMs from the recent nerf, I would not count on many allies carrying LRMs. NARC has an issue where friendly ECM can destroy it, so you have to press J to switch your ECM to Counter BEFORE firing a NARC, and then you can switch it back after pulling away from the target. TAG can be used by anything with an energy slot.

Yes. Buy a 3L. ECM won't be changing so you can feel secure in your investment.

The Raven 3L is a big investment. The end build cost totals up to the 11 and a half million C-Bills mark. So that's the cost of a Atlas when you think of it. I run Ravens, Jenners, Commandos, Spiders and am looking forward to the Flea when it comes out. The Raven 3L is great fun but takes too much flack from haters so I run my Commando 2D more often than the Raven. Another option if you enjoy the speed of the lights is possibly stepping up to a really fast medium. The Cicada's are pretty much a heavier Jenner with more armour and still the same weapon systems of multiple lasers. I do less "Tag" spotting with my Cicada 3M than I do with my Ravens but take more of a harassment and flanker role. Its extra armour gives it so much more survivability compared to its light cousins but the speed can still be at the 140kph to 150kph mark. As for the play style of being a scout and spotter they are all viable and useful for a team. I almost always drop in a group of 4 players and because of my fondness of fast mechs I am always the designated spotter, harassment, flanker and of course base attack/defender. Without competent or even a mediocre scout your team suffers. Welcome to MechWarriorOnline and welcome to the Light Brigades... don't take crap from Assaults, just taunt then as you capture their base.

Sound advice, but a few things to keep in mind:
  • all mechs cost considerably more to fully upgrade to an optimum build
  • stock RVN-3L comes with FF, 2mlasers and ECM; things you will ultimately want in your build
  • the difference in max armor between a RVN-3L and CDA-3M are only 36 points
For a first mech the RVN-3L is a great choice.
