You get to pick your first, singular mech free, right? Well, what do you think most people, who don't know anything about this game, are going to do? Pick the squishy-yet-adorable Raven and 'scout'? Most of us are pretty certain there's going to be a tremendous influx of Assault mechs, probably Atlases, as nubs are more likely to go with the BIGGER = BETTER mentality.
My worry is this - you aren't going to get your second mech until you either pay or play a lot, and I presume there won't be a way to trade in your original free mech. I'm concerned that for the early parts of this game's life, nubs are going to flood servers enmasse and we're going to be facing wave after wave of assaults on assaults. Newbies are going to get tired of their mech being so slow and probably less effective than they hoped, they're going to get tired of seeing nothing but other assaults everywhere, other people are going to get sick of it, etc. and it's going to hurt this game. Maybe not a lot, but it will.
Now, this is all conjecture based on assuming that because people are stupid they're going to pick the stupidest mechs to play. So with that in mind, if this is going to be a problem and degrade the quality of the game, what kind of countermeasures can be taken to torpedo overuse of Assaults?
I wouldn't object to allowing any / all mech purchases to be refunded within a few days, to allow you to take it for a few test drives to see if you like it, so people could exchange their stupid Atlases for something more practical.
Am I completely off my rocker here?
I sure as hell hope the noobs all flood the game with Atlas class mechs. I really wish I could hear their screams as I lay waste to them from afar raining LRMs down on them with my Catapult. They will learn quickly that the biggest doesn't mean best in MW. Unlke WOT skill means something, and just because you are in an Atlas doesn't make you immune to the lowly Raven stalking you from the rear.

Any Mech pilot with experience or in a experienced company knows that A Noob in a Heavy mech is just as easy to kill as a Noob in a Light Mech. So 10 Noobs in Heavies just makes for a Mercs wetdream, Think of the salvage.
The Noobs to this game will learn the same way we did all those years ago, trial by fire. And everyone seems to forget that all these new players have been playing all the new games, so they will have at least an idea of whats up.
And even if I am wrong, think about the target rich environment.. Really Big Targets.!

I'm not too worried, this game doesn't seem to boil down to "My gun is bigger than yours, I win."
To me it seems more like "Your gun may be bigger, but I just lured you into my waiting lance, right where we want you; and your 'big gun' just made you a big target."
EDIT: Not to mention, rushing recklessly to your death in an Assault mech is MUCH more expensive than in a light mech.

A certain percentage of people new to the IP are of course going to be drawn to the heavier mechs, they offer staying power, and firepower that will allow them to get to grips with the game and still be useful. Certainly some of them are going to charge into the fray in their first game with little regard for their own safety or the objectives, and I would lay down cash on the idea that many of us "Vets" will do the same the first time we get onto the servers and seek to explore the possibilities inherent in the game.
I would however offer a word of warning to the players that are convinced they will take assault mechs apart using light or medium chassis's. You had better be DAMN good, you have to make every single shot count to take down the armour of an assault class mech and core it through to destruction because every time you take a shot and try desperately to hit the same location as last time, that assault might have a firing solution for you. That assault you have been harassing for minutes needs only to be skilled, or lucky, once or twice, and your toast. An assault mech carries so much firepower it can blast through a light mechs armour and hit weapons, ammo, gyro's or the fusion engine very, very quickly.
I salute every mechwarrior that has the balls and skill to take an assault in a light, but so many people here talk like there going to be popping assaults left right and centre, and I just don't see the game heading that way, yes role and information warfare will go some way to addressing the traditional arms race that takes place in mechwarrior games, but an assault mech should still be something to fear, if it isn't, then something, somewhere along the line has gone very wrong in development.

trolling aside
I would like to agree with you there but in any war somebody has to make the big guns! Think back to WW1(thats World War 1) with the creation of tanks, was it fair NO. Did a lot of germans die, YES. In the opinion of this Mechwarrior fan, what would mechwarrior game be without a giant walking tank of doom AKA "Atlas".(not the book with maps, the giant walking mech of doom)

The Devs have stated that at launch, they are not limiting teams in any way, but they are looking into their own version of the Battle Value system.
Also, games are 12v12. You can't go into a match with less than 12 people on a team, right now that's the only way they have it.
You're wrong there; its up to 12v12 so far........it could be as low as 2v2 and up - second - I've seen the community here its a damn good one - unless you're in beta........you don't know how the mechs handle; what's what - how things are balanced.....

I don't give two C-bills what nubs pick as their mech, but this idea here needs to be in the game. Test drive periods.

The way combat plays out has only been in the hands of the dev team and the Beta testers. This is by far not the case.
Please wait for further information and/or getting your hands on the game.
