Then, from there, simply treat the Array like an engine treats heatsinks - you can drop MGs into it, up to a specific limit.
The result? We can start seeing 4-6 MGs on 'mechs as backup and then they would start to get pretty useful.
MG Arrays were something added later in Btech but it's pretty fuzzy on the when and how, and by moving the concept to MW:O you'd allow for low-ballistic 'mechs to still pack reasonable MGs without having to adjust the weapon more.
EDIT: I see no reason the entire Array couldn't be counted as a single weapon for firing purposes, either, clearing the other problem.
EDIT 2: The hard tech rule is indeed way in the future (3068), but their purpose is very different here (specifically to remove an issue with the way hardpoints limit small caliber weapons by necessity) and the concept of arrays is referenced in countless 3025 fluff. I think it'd work out fine under the circumstances.
