Mechanical skill can help you grind through a brawl. You can develop that just by playing. I'm a much better shot with a Gauss rifle than I was when I first started playing. Having a rough understanding of the best strategy to pursue, on the other hand, was something I figured out by the time my fourth match was over. That comes with a willingness to accept that what you did may have been wrong, and that while you played well and made no errors of emission, you may have made a severe error of omission that cost you the game. These guys who are begging for TDM have no conception of these latter errors, and do not play to improve and enjoy the game so much as they play to win. Paradoxically, this is a great way to lose more, and notice those losses more.
I'm pretty sure they will TL;DR through what you said, but your point is good and accurate. The reality is that if you don't have "total control" over the situation, complaining why you are in the situation in the first place is easier to do. Most that complain are probably running heavier mechs and chassis and have very little interest in responding to capping threats... or even asking for a faster scouting teammate to do their job.
The key important thing about knowing the situation is that people have to actually act on it. I recently played a match on Tourmaline and I believe we were being capped early. There was another light with me (or was it a Cicada, I cannot recall) and we were near their base. My teammate decided to go back and I went to cap... I was hoping to draw the enemy back to their base (I was in a Jenner). Anyways, it happens that our base was almost capped, and 2 of the enemy came responding to my capping.
Suffice it to say, it was 6-1 (in favor of my team) when I checked the scoreboard (I think we started the match 7v8, which I was on the team of 7) and those two mechs that happened to come back to get me eventually died.
Sometimes it truly is a simple matter of teamwork, but hey, I WANNA BLOW UP OTHER MECHS AMIRITE?
