ok.. after playing with the mech lab..
It looks like if i swap to double heatsinks and do nothing else my tonage drops a good amount..
this leaves me room to drop 3 double heat sinks in each side of my chest. (where my SRM6's are stored) Other than that the only place i have room to add them are my legs/arms.. which i was not sure they can fit, or are efficient in those places
the total heat rate number rises even with the less heat sinks, but taking up lots more space.
It looks like i can add a bigger engine, up to the 230..
with this weight i can stuff an AMS, with a case and 1 ton of ammo.. If i want 2 tons i must drop the engine down to 225
all these mods look like it costs around 3.5m, which i could buy another chasis instead!
But AMS, and faster engine, and i think better heat use might be pretty decent. Does this look like a good idea? or am i way off on this.. took me all weekend to earn this cash.. really don't wanna blow it on a mistake

Over time you will build up a store of equipment as you buy stuff. it only seems really expensive in the beginning.
Buying a Hero mech will help. They give a 30% bonus to CBills earned from everything.

I figured out the xp thing, it is tied to chasis, so looks like i have a lotta saved xp.
I know you figured this out anyway, but..
You can use General XP (GXP) to help you quickly fill these out for now. However you will want to save General XP for unlocking modules which can do much cooler things... They are super expensive to unlock in terms of GXP.
-----------------
The upgrades window.
Engines. Info on the largest STD 260 is on the bottom. The info on the XL (more expensive, more dangerous, but lighter) engine is on the right. (Team 'Merika!)
A flamer installed on the head. Honestly I prefer flamers in pairs, grouped in pairs, and placed on chainfire (use backspace to chainfire which fires one at a time, and cycles. This reduces the heat it generates.)
Any weapon you can install will be in the list. Note this list will change based on the hardpoints in the body part you picked.
The heat efficiency and such of this fire support mech, with 5 medium lasers, 2 LRM-10s, and one flamer in the head. Its weakness? If I lose any part of the torso I am instantly dead, like the Dragon 5N[c] is. Mechs with STD engines can lose both side torsos and still run around.
Wee!

Seems like a great start! 1,500,000 of that is the upgrade to double heat sinks. More comes from the engine, which isn't cheap. Many engines are as expensive as mechs. Or more expensive.
Ways you can help with the weight.. You could convert the SRM-6s into Streak SRM-2s to help with fighting faster enemies, but you won't have a lot of damage you can do to big guys if you do. It would get lighter, though.
Could drop the AMS for now.
You can store your missiles in your feet.
Remember to not use that flamer too much. A lone flamer can't be chainfired, and generates lots of heat. Practice with it in the testing grounds before fighting.

You're very close to spot on!
I'd move the SRM ammo out of your torsos, into your legs. I'd do Double Heat sinks AND Endo Steel. You'll be basically out of Crit slots but you can get a 250 or 260 STD engine and have a GREAT mech!
This looks about right, you may move some armor from the front to the back, I would, but my work PC doesn't like smurfy mechlab so I was too lazy to take the couple minutes to get that sorted: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...2f495f13aaf102c
One thing is I don't use AMS, I'd take 1 more Double Heat Sink and some more amor on the legs/arms. Some peolpe might look at this build and tell you to drop a heat sink for more armor, your mileage may vary. One thing you can look at down the road is dropping AMS and a heat sink for Artemis on the SRM's, it helps the spread pattern a bit. You can also swap the Medium Laser in the head for TAG if you know your team mates are bringing LRMS... Anyway, great mech, lots of versatility, speed, and firepower!
Oh and I forgot to mention basically the ONLY reason to get ferro fibrous is if you already have Endosteel, endosteel ALWAYS saves you more than twice the tonnage, takes the same crit slots, and that more than makes up for the extra cost in everyone's books.

that was an awesome tip on how to build mechs. It gave me other things to think about.
I totally get what you are saying about the spread on the SMR 6's It seems like you can just dumb fire them right? aka they hit what is in front of you? Been trying to use them on those pesky scout mechs that give me fits when in the hands of a good pilot. Nothing ****** me off more than chasing one of those things for 3 mins and not landing a shot.. and more than one has one chased me down and killed me with a back shot. Maybe i should try to figure out how to add armor!

I have found lasers to be a great solution for both. A large laser will easily hit the fastest light mech and will still be noticeable to the heaviest. A light may not notice a Streak SRM 2 or a medium laser, but they run off real quick when I start splashing them with large laser fire.

I'd aim your missiles at their center-mass, or where their center-of-mass is likely to be in a second and a half or so when you're nice and close with them! Lasers to their legs wreck them quick too! Raven legs are squishy and when you destroy one leg they go down quick!

On Gameplay and staying alive, everyone above is correct. Try to stay with your team. If you get stranded alone you are toast. Try to find the opposing mech everyone else is shooting or the most damage and put a few shots into it. You may get a savior kill or kill.
Do not run off alone even to cap resource points, its too dangerous.
Do not turn around and run from an enemy you will just die tired (in this case they will drill your back armor).
Do not think that that light cannot possible take you down, he can and he will.
Try to get him to run by another mech on your team. This gives others a shot at him and will possible get him off your back and maybe killed.
