While I am one of those people who has been wanting to see a full return of mechs falling over when running into each other, I thought about a good way to reinstate it with a different spin.
How about having it so that a mech will fall over if a leg gets destroyed due to an ammunition explosion? Of course they can still get up and move under the same 'legged' speed penalty, but this adds a new level of risk to consider when storing ammo in the legs.
I'm interested to see what others think about this.

I would rather they just fix collisions and add DFA.
The penalty for getting legged seems bad enough... (or is this a thinly veiled 'no ammo in legs' thread?)

It is always possible they will add 'fall downs' from leg destruction, ammo explosion or not.

I'd be so upset if they did as you're suggesting, simply because if I plow into the ground (and staying there) because my leg was destroyed it would mean absolute and certain death with no way to defend myself... At least with my speed reduced greatly because I got legged I have some chance of killing someone. With your suggestion, all I'm going to see is a third person view on being gang ban... I'm sure you get my point...

It's never happened in MW3 or 4, and both had knockdowns. Then again, iirc knockdowns in MW4 were fairly rare, while losing a single leg in MW3 was instant death anyways (heavily damaging it would cause the limping you see after losing a leg now, I believe you could also sustain damage to your engine without losing it, which would slow you down as well, quite funny to end up in a Puma going 19kph with nothing but a flamer left).
I don't really see how this would discourage people from putting ammo in their legs. If you lose a leg you're already pretty much a stationary target, but at least you can continue to fight back in those final two seconds before your other leg is gone.

I thought about that, too, but ultimately felt like initiating a fall by ammo explosion would be more like a 'reward' for rolling up the appropriate crit.

There are very few situations where a leg ammo explosion will NOT result in mech destruction. 90% of the ammo will blow your leg outright and compromise the torso. Only Narc and partially spent AMS ammo are survivable.
Currently, 1 ton of LRM ammo in a leg does enough damage to pop an atlas when crit.

I don't think I've ever been destroyed by having any leg ammo explode. Even with XL engines.

All of my mechs that use ammo have some in their legs. I have died to ammo explosions exactly zero times. Even when I lose both legs (which is what actually kills me).
