Seriously, that's why it's worth at least TRYING to increase the damage a bit. Because doing so is trivial to implement and test. It's a change in a configuration file.

Implementing a change to MG damage would cost essentially zero time and effort.

Let's look at potential outcomes here:

Best Case Scenario:
MG damage is increased, and some portion of mechs begin running them effectively. However, they are not OP, and everyone is happy.

Worst Case Scenario:
The MG becomes totally OP, and swarms of MG carrying spiders, jagermechs, and cicadas run roughshod over the plains of MWO. And then, we reduce their damage, and things are better again.

See, that's the key point. In the worst possible scenario, you can just change the MG damage back, and no harm done. Certainly, it could not possibly be worse than some prior patches where certain weapons like missiles became ridiculously OP for a week.

We're in beta. We're here to test stuff. Let us TRY using MG's with different damage stats.

That's the beauty of beta... if things get OP, we can just nerf them. But it makes no sense for us to be afraid that a weapon, which is seen as useless by the vast majority of the community, is going to suddenly become the best weapon in the game and dominate everything.. because even if that were to somehow happen, we could just change it back.

there is no possible way for MGs to be OP.

so im not sure why the wont buff it. and even compare it to the very weak small laser. saying that if they made it "as powerful as the small laser" they would have 6 MG spiders running around 1 shotting people's backs.

1. first of all a 6 small laser jenner could not run around 1 shottiing anyones back

2 second the spider cannot mount 6 MGs.

3. third the MG is currently 1/3 the dps of small lasers.

i think we can put one shotting 6 MG spiders to rest.

Well, technically they could be. But it would involve a lot of alcohol.

They wouldn't even have to be as good as small lasers (which I never use) to satisfy me. I would be fine with them still being bad enough that no one would ever want them as anything but filler in mechs with hardpoints and tonnage going otherwise unused.

I just want them to actually do something. I want the Spider 5K to not be a single-hardpoint mech. I want to not pay 1.5 tons for a noisemaker that occasionally explodes.

The point here isn't whether MG's need to be buffed, or whether they would be OP.

The point is that we don't need to decide such a thing academically. We can simply implement a damage buff, AND THEN TEST IT IN GAME.

We can simply TRY the game with buffed machine guns, and then we can evaluate the result. If PGI doesn't like the result, they can, if nothing else, just revert them back to their current stats.

There is literally nothing at risk here, and there is essentially zero cost in making such a change.

When you have a choice with zero risk, zero cost, and potentially high rewards, then it's foolish to NOT give it a chance.

There is about 10 thread about this already. Why do you want every weapon to do equal damage? MG's arent meant to be super powerful.

Sure there is: set each bullet to 10 damage, keep the ROF the same. Now it is OP :)

they aren't intended to be useless either.

Apparently the low-ton mechs with 4 ballistic hard-points and only 1 energy point are, indeed, meant to be useless.

"Working as intended" is basically what PGI has said. That is beyond stupid.

We have to consolidate all the threads on Machine Gun feedback because there's too many of them at present. Please continue here.
