For a weapon that has no heat and can fire nonstop until it's out of ammo, with 2000 rounds per ton of ammo..not a bad trade off. It's a weapon you use when you've stripped armor and then it actually does something worthwhile. I've used them to kill when I was out of other weapons and my targets had damaged areas, which is typical for an end of round scenerio. Use them prior to that, yeah, useless.
Mind you, I'm not HAPPY with the way MGs work, I had an IS version of the Piranha before FASA introduced Clans because..well..it's a damned super effective Mech if you give it a lot of speed and JJs. Jump in behind a target, fire all the MGs at once, and watch the target die. Start of next round, jump behind the next poor sap and repeat...until you forget and jump behind someone with flippable arms and really big guns on them

I do believe a buff would be nice, and crits to essential components feels like it should've been implemented earlier.
I think a few of us were spoiled by the MW2 and MW3 machine guns however.

u cant use MGs to kill. they do 0.4 DPS to health.
only thing you can do is strip the internals.
meanwhile the small laser does 1.0 DPS. By the time the MGs start to touch critical components. the Small laser has already killed the mech.
and you know how many components the small laser gets rid of at half the time of the MG?
ALL OF THEM.
the mech is dead.
so are ALL of its components at HALF the speed.
its not rocket surgery

double the damage and half the ammo, and we have a useful weapon... to a small degree. 90 meters and spread damage still keep them from OP

My old jenner F does 6 DPS for 15s and 4.47 continuous DPS (6 small lasers, 3 tons - 7 tons of heat sinks)
My Spider 5K does .16 DPS continuous (4 machine guns, 2 tons, 4 tons of ammo)
