Maybe this is a newbie question, but, when AMS ammo is destroyed, does it cause damage as an ammo destruction? Also, now that I think of it, when ammo stored in an arm is destroyed, does excess damage from that explosion (that is, in excess of the armor/internal structure left in the arm) transfer to the side torso? I recall that that's how it works in the tabletop game, but I don't know what might have changed here, and I'm just trying to decide on where to put extra ammo that won't fit in the legs and head. Finally, if forced to decide, is it better to put extra ammo in the center torso or side torsos?

Yes.

On the transfer question, yes, unless you have CASE in the location where the ammo was initially destroyed.

Not necessarily in that location - if you have enough ammo in the arm to take out both arm and side torso, and still do some damage to the CT, CASE in the side torso will prevent that damage from spreading to the CT.

Something that all of the posts above missed:
- If your arm is separated from the side torso *before* the ammo has been destroyed then it won't blow into your side torso. Note that ammo can be destroyed before your arm/torso is completely destroyed due to the current critical system in place.

When an Ammo Explosions happens in a Limb the damage will eat away at the Internal Structure in the limb. Excess damage will transfer to the Side Torso. Then any remaining damage will transfer to the Center Torso.

Inner Sphere C.A.S.E., can only be placed in the Side Torso, will prevent the Ammo Explosion from reaching the Center Torso.

Clan C.A.S.E., when it is introduced and the stick to LORE, can be placed in the Limbs.

Ask the Devs #35
oldhasu: When ammo is destroyed by a critical hit, sometimes it explodes. Sometimes not. How does this calculated? What is the percentage of the probability?
A: There are two different times that ammo can explode. If an ammo bin is destroyed by a critical hit (each bin currently has 10 health), there is a 10% chance that the ammo remaining in that bin will explode. When a location, such as the right torso, is destroyed, each ammo bin in that location that had not already been destroyed by crit hits has an individual 10% chance to explode. There are two exceptions to this. The first is that, if you have ammo stored in your arm, and your arm falls off when your side torso is destroyed, there is no chance of the ammo exploding. The other is that Gauss Rifle ammo never explodes. However, all the explosion rules also apply to Gauss Rifles, except that they have a 90% chance of exploding.
