http://www.foxnews.c...-new-laser-gun/

I know its foxnews, but that's part of the comedy.

I do find it scary, though.

The railgun demo in 2008 was awesome. Future tech is so cool.

They need to do some serious research on lasers with actual visible colored laser beams. These invisible laser beams are lame as ****, and as a taxpayer, I won't stand for it.

Yeah, the railgun tech demo was one of the coolest things, but i personally prefer the 'stick a megawatt-class laser in a boeing 747 and proceed to -melt from above- '

I've never understood why the left ridicules fox news. The right feels the same way about mainstream media.

It's such an asinine concept.

for cohearent light beams like lasers, its not acutally light that will be used.

Instead the only way to get something like the laser to actually exisit. We will have to use Plasma, which is another state of energy. Lasers are nothing more then solid plasma, or bolts of plasma being fired.

Because anything you say against the "left" is automatically wrong and you a bigot and a raciest if you think any other way then there way.

The military has been trying out this stuff for awhile. Energy consumption is the issue now not the weapon itself.

Its not about 'left' or 'right' really, since my comment had absolutely no political meaning to it.

Its just that Fox News is generally accepted as a terrible source for news and, ironically, a great source for lols.

Seriously guys, let's not get going on political stuff.

In the article they also mentio a PPC

"Called the FEL -- for free-electron laser, which doesn't use a gain medium and is therefore more versatile -- it was tested in February consuming a blistering 500 kilovolts of energy, producing a supercharged electron beam that can burn through 20 feet of steel per second."

Because watching Fox News makes you less informed than not watching it.

I know, right!? The best part is when you realize the explosion from the barrel is not really an explosion, it is the air ionizing in the slug's wake.

Please people, don't make this thread get locked. Keep the politics out of it.

Some of this stuff is really exciting. I remember reading an article a couple of years ago that the navy was developing anti-missile warfare using lasers, and was actually going to roll out these things on their destroyers by 2014-2015. The technology level is just so exciting.

Energy consumption is the issue, yes. That was why they shelved the whole 'laser in a plane' concept.
What originally caught my eye regarding the whole 'futuristic weaponry: available now!' thing was this article from /. http://tech.slashdot...n-2014?sbsrc=md
In which they are going to deploy one of those in a ship. Probably power it with the nuclear reactor in there. Huh another parallel.

Reactor online indeed.

Yes, this is the same exact anti missile technology that was being developed in that article years ago and is on the verge of being deployed, which makes me go 'holy crap, we live in the future!'
