  • Each team is limited to 300 tons.
  • Each team must have a minimum of 3 mechs, and may have a maximum of 12.
  • The objective is to destroy or defend a structure/vehicle/other objective depending on which side you are randomly assigned to.
  • Game mode is entire premade team or solo/duo queue only. This would prevent the unfair advantage that would occur when many lights who play together a lot queue together. They can still do this, but only in a premade/predesigned team environment where the other team has the same opportunity to plan.
This game mode (or something like it) would promote a new level of strategy, in team design. It would also allow players to experience dynamic battles, where a few heavy and assault mechs could face a horde of lights, as well as any number of matchups between those extremes. Teams would also need to collide at some point to resolve the objective (either trying to destroy it, or protect it,) and would have to be balanced enough to handle either task thrown at them.

Please discuss.

I would pay to watch 10 Spiders or 12 Streakmandos duke it out with 3 Atlai.

Yes, having a straight tonnage limit per side is how we used to do it in the old planetary leagues back in MW4.

It generally works well.

I'm ok with this. I also like how one side can be outnumbered. I don't know how popular it would be though. Personally I think it should be defaulted in to the matchmaker but I'm annoying like that.

the atlai would get murdered. There would be no reason to run anything but 12 streakmandos or 7x 3L + 2x 2D in such a mode. Lights are to "balanced" with all the other classes for this to work.

Why would there be any reason to not run with the largest number of light mechs possible?

12x Commando 2D's. Do I really need to explain beyond mentioning this?

I would not play in a game mode using this sort of "balance".

kuangmk11 hit the nail on the head - PGI has tried hard to balance across weight classes, and an Atlas is not the equivalent of lets say 2 ECM ravens and an ECM commando.

If you mix max tonnage with a limit on how many mechs you can have of each class, you would probably be better off. Atlas + Commando vs Awesome + Raven might work.

As for playing against a numerically superior team, I think we have all been on the wrong side of an 5x8 match or two...

I have no doubt it would be a popular and effective strategy; however, it could be countered. When all you have are lights, even a medium or a heavy becomes a goliath in the battle.

That said, this is a valid criticism. I know if this game mode went into action, we would see 12 lights. I just think it could be defeated with a variety of team comps. We won't know for sure unless we try it.

This, given that the most effective thing against light mechs is other light mechs nobody would ever have a reason to take anything heavier than a medium.

Unfortunately, limiting to a game-mode like that will result in "failed to find a match" with several people sitting in-queue.... while I support your thought - it needs a bit of refinement :)

A straight up tonnage limit would not work unless each side was bound within a limit. In Battletech Tabletop the side that has more 'Mechs gets a bonus to their BV (Battle Value) to factor in the advantage of numbers.

Absolutely love the idea of game with tonnage limits, that can have uneven teams. It would be a great way for grouped players to get into games with odd numbers of people but still leave a match balanced.

I feel like 12 lights will beat our 3 Atlas every time, no?

But I love the idea and would like to try it for sure.

It would be 4-12 or even 6-12.

Also, Capture speeds need to be reduced with bigger teams. If both teams (say 6 vs 10) were all on a point, both teams would cap at the same speed.

Battle Value would be better, but then you have to decide how to calculate said value. After patches, you may have to change BV again. It would be to much chaos on the forums alone.

Lol it would be a slaughter fest. The Atlases will die. If anything there should be a 400 ton MINIMUM game mode.

I will have to read about BV, I never played the table top, but it seems like one previously worked out solution.

Because the game mode is 300 tons, 3/100 ton mechs would be the minimum team size. It would not be the most effective, but it would be possible.

Game mode would not be capture, it would be destroy/defend an objective depending on which side you were on.
