Which are worth playing depends on what your play style is. If you're looking to run a fire support mech that plinks away behind the main force, the 8Q and 9M are great for that. If you prefer fighting closer to he action, the 8V, PB and 8R are better suited for that. The 8R, even with the missile nerfs is still very solid. With an SRM-heavy build, it's essentially a splatcat that trades a little speed and maneuverability for durability, more "focused" damage and more range (you can carry a pair of PPCs or other heavy energy weapons as part of the build). In my opinion, the nerfs on the SRM side have been kind of overstated. They still work well, and the mechs I run them in all still seem perfectly viable. I just use up a little more ammo in most games...

The 9M is fantastic. You need a big XL and either 3xPPCs or 4xLLAS. Personally, I run an XL385, 3xPPCs and 21 DHS, (or 20 with 3xSLAS tossed in when I want to see red lights).

I would go with the XL380 ... saves you some weight and comes in at the same weight as the XL375. Even if speed is your friend, the difference in that case has no impact on how the mech pilots.

I personally have my 9M equipped like a (super-)heavy Brawler. Only one LL, 4 MLs and 2xSSRM2s. I've played around with LLs and LPLs ... but I somehow always come back to this one. Maybe because all the more enery-heavy builds tend to run too hot for longer brawls.

For successfully piloting the AWS you need to "master" torso twist - if you look at the arm hitboxes, you notice that they almost entirely cover the STs if you look at it from the side. And of course its always handy to just spread the damage over your mech instead of just getting cored and giving the opponent higher salvage bonuses.

The best thing about an awesome is that people will target heavies before you sometimes, and always shoot Atlas\ Stalkers first unless you are making yourself an easy target.

Well the awesome is always an easy target but....

PS: as I said all about the 9M

XL360 + speed tweak is all you need, even a 340 is enough to give you the mobility of a 65 tonner.

There is only one Awesome worth playing, and that is the R missile boat.

There is no better missile boat, because in addition to the 4x launchers and weight, you have a left arm you can safely load up with LRM ammo and have 1000+ rounds.

Other awesomes are outperformed across the board.

9m is NOT a good awesome, it is sucker bait.
Looks good on paper and can go real fast....but
-Hardoint configuration blows
-Is a very easy target (especially for LRMs)
-Heavy energy mounts are in the worst possible position. Nearly impossible to be in cover and fire them.
-Heavy energy mounts DO NOT SHOOT where you aim them
-Typical configurations are outperformed by other mechs doing the same thing

None. We haven't run Awesomes since the engine cap in closed beta.

Eclipsed by the Highlander. Nerfed by the lack of Double Heatsinks. It's what happens when you use TT Stock Mechs for hardpoint layout, but don't give them double heatsinks to complete the mechs with. Awesomes should get better heat dissapation as a characteristic to make up for no DHS.

I can't believe anyone voted for the AWS-PB, melt it down into something useful. Thumbtacks or something.

Due to the larger maps, I've been running my 9M as a PPC + Streak boat (w/360 degree target retention module). It's kind of fun in a support role.

But god streaks are horrible! They do hardly any damage at all. And people are calling for them to be nerfed? Seriously?

I don't drive mediums so not sure about this but can any medium use 4 LPulse and still move at max speed? The 9m can and its amazing how effective is is at nailing cat heads or getting behind the slow mechs for coring. Works well for legging lights too. You may have a point because so many Atlas drivers think its a good idea to just ignore you so you don't even have to move behind them.

I think hunches can pull it off though without the same ability to handle heat. They aren't larger than the universe with an XL though so hunches end up being much harder to kill in my experience. Taking out the sides of an awesome is like shooting a barn from the inside. They have the survivability, speed, and loadout of a heavy but the size of an assault and require an XL unless they're missile or PPC boating.

They're awful mechs.
