After more than 4.5k matches, i have the following to say:

Those matches between Heavies/Assaults are a lot of fun, even mediums are fun. But those lights? They are just a pain in the neck of the game.

I myself use a Cicada-3M instead of my Heavy Metal or Jager, or Phract, or Cata.... if i need XP and/or money. But to play with big mechs vs. other big mechs, that's the real fun.;)

Because the game becomes what it is suppose to be. You unload damage on Mechs, get pummeled in return, lasers and missiles flying everywhere, robots exploding left and right. It's what makes the game fun.

Well, the game Assault/Heavy vs.Assault/Heavy is what i know from the books, and what i expect from a Battletech base game - not that high speed running around i know from lights. As i wrote: I myself use the Cicada, not a heavy to get XP/Money ....

These are usually the most boring games.

Lights and Mediums help break up the more static battles. An Atlas might be able to make a push but if the team doesn't all push at once that Atlas can often be focused down before it can do significant damage. On the other hand a Medium or Light can zip into a flank and force the enemy team to deal with them or let them free in their backfield which means more maneuvering and less static lines.

We need lights in the game because running a group of 3+ spiders with friends is the most fun I've ever had in this game.

Cap all the things!

Glad you enjoy one aspect of the game ;)

Me, on the other hand, loves the challenge of being the smallest, most fragile thing on the battlefield - and then taking out multiples of your own weight in enemy 'mechs. Nothing quite like the rush you get when you know that any mistake at all will be your last.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I thought this was supposed to be a game of strategies and tactics, This is the problem, everyone wants to be the "hero" and kill everything. I have as much fun in a light sneaking around the outside of the battle and letting ppl know were they are and what they are doing as I make my way to the base and do the job that the light is designed for. We all love to make things go BOOM, I will be the first to admit it. but if you want to just get in a shoot out and move on to the next game... thinking there are other mech style games that let you mindlessly shoot to your hearts content

Don't get me wrong - i LOVE my Cicada. ;)

But i also love the big battles - and i love them more than the fast ones.

Fast mechs in Table top are just as annoying. Perhaps even more so. You can push those movement and range modifiers so high as to make hitting damn near impossible. I'e found that the most reliable way to stop these kinds of shenanigans are using things like landmines, artillery, or other area weapons (mine clearance ammo). At least in MWO you have more of a fighting chance.

Different strokes for different folks.

Myself, I love diversity and having many ways to win; I pilot Spiders, Jenners, Dragons and Atlai. I have most fun in the first ones, playing the Atlai rarely, and only when feeling like getting more kills (same damage, more kills). Playing the Spider 5K when I want to hurt myself...

Speaking of which - almost done leveling them - anyone have recommendations of what next?

Apparently most people agree with you. According to the data hammerreborn collected this weekend, only 11% of mechs on the field are lights; over two thirds are heavy or assault.

You should all look at the data in this excellent thread: results to date on page six: http://mwomercs.com/...ection-weekend/

I can definitely see where you're coming from, TS.

When I started playing this game, I was disappointed because everything was moving way too fast. It didn't feel like I was piloting a 30-ton mech, much less a 65 ton mech, because they were too fast and agile. Whether I'm piloting a jump jetting Spider or shooting at one, it feels less like Mechwarrior and more like Quake Arena.

Maybe it's because I mostly played heavy mechs in the older Mechwarrior games. But I would like to see a slower pace in this game. The more methodical, drawn out battles where you exchange blows back and forth, like a 12 round boxing match.

I think that has more to do with the fact that heavy or assault mechs do more damage and get more kills, which makes them more fun to play for most players. No?

Three Words ... Host State Rewind (for ballistics / missiles).

Dealing with Lights used to be far worse before HSR was implemented for energy weapons. The problem still exists for Ballistics and Missiles.

Lights will be easier to kill, and ergo less of a pain, when you can lock and fire and majority of the missiles land ... and they do decent damage (they will be un-nerfed at some point). Ballistics will land more often as well.

But yes, some of the lights are far too sturdy imo. Fix it now? waste of time. Dev's need to fix the other issues first, so that things are doing the damage they are supposed to, then a balance pass makes sense.

Well lights might you know, fit some one else's play style. Yours leans towards heavies and assualts, mines leans towards mediums. I actually have alot of fun backing up lights, they got a bit more speed and I've got a little more firepower making a nice one two punch I also like backing up assualts/heavies they bing firepower while Bring agility.

Just becuase you don't like lights doesn't mean other players should lose something that leans towards their playing style. It's fine if you like being big and loaded with weapons, keep sticking to it if it makes you happy. Just don't ask pgi to punish people who have a different style by removing lights.

I can't have fun in anything weighing over 50 tons. That being said, I understand how lights can be annoying. That is exactly why I use them. I take great pleasure in exploiting the weaknesses in peoples builds. I love toying with LRM BOATS that didn't think to bring any close range weapons. I love slowly melting a PPC Stalker BOAT because he can't aim. I love making people regret dropping with an XL engine or not using C.A.S.E. to protect from ammo explosions. Needless to say, picking on less able pilots is also a great deal of fun and a challenge to other players to ADAPT. Whether you like it or not, lights are necessary. Players want to load up their Mechs with as much fire power as possible (boating) and they don't like it when you exploit their builds weaknesses. You say,"shame on you light pilot, you are annoying". I say,"shame on you for being taken about by a go-cart with a handful of lasers." Thats just my opinion. I'm sure there are plenty of players to support either side of this. I'd also, like to add that if PGI makes lights unplayable like heavy and assault pilots want so badly then I for one won't play or spend money on this game.

???????

Really?

Okay while Victor might have been in... well.. a Victor a lot. Pilots like Kai Allard-Liao is known for his custom ride. You might know it as the Yen-Lo-Wang... a medium mech.

Phelan Kell of the Kell Hounds piloted a Wolfhound, a light mech.

While Theodore Kurita piloted Assaults his wife piloted a Panther while in service.

Jacob Kincaid ran a modified Uziel.

Book Mechwarriors ran a variety of mechs big and small.

Hmmm, lights are not that hard to kill, they are only anoying, if they are in groups of 2-4 ... A Single light is not even dangerous to my Highlander or my Katana. But i hate it, if they come in groups.

But i guess, some of you still get me wrong. It's more as Alistair Winter said: Sometimes the game is just to fast, way to fast. So you do not get the feeling of playing battlteech. This might sound strange if one, who likes the Cicada, is saying it. But it's exactly how it feels to me.

Except MWO Devs messed it all up by implementing double armor. So the only way you can replicate the fun, brutal battles you read about is to pilot the heavier mechs. A single PPC is feared in the book as he can punch through armor. In this game, it does very little damage unless you boat it.

Kai's AC20 would chew the hell out of a Mech in one salvo. In this game, it just damages the armor. It's the twin AC20 Cats that can punch through.
