People tell me all the time that medium mechs are useless and I couldn't disagree more. Typically, I tend to count the cicada as a pudgy light and since the missile nerf, trebs seems to be scarce. But I certainly see the hunchback and centurion as much as ever. To all of the medium pilots out there, why do you pilot a medium and what's your typical strat?

If you see me on the battlefield, youll usually see me in a Hunchie, or a Flame (Jager too sometimes) and rarely a CTF-4x.

4G was the first 'Mech I ever bought, and the first one I finalized a loadout on. I also tend to drive a 4P and sometimes a 4SP. Why? I love their mix of speed, firepower and armor. Usually I try to act as a heavy scout, or a striker/harrasser/flanker. Go after one of the enemies big mechs thats seperated, or run around in their midst wreaking havoc with my Big Cannon. Not alot of kills, but hopefully I give the rest of my team some breathing room to wipe the floor with the enemy.

In short, Mediums (ESPECIALLY HBKs) Rock!

There are plenty of great mediums out there. They're not built for tanking, they're either really quick light killers/skirmishers, or support brawlers that pack a pretty hefty punch. I don't know about the treb, but hunchies, cents and cicadas are still mechs to be reckoned with.

Trebuchet-7M
ERPPC, 2 Medium Pulse, SRM-6, 2 SSRM-2, with 100 KPH
-Auxiliary Scout, Scout Support, Harrasser and light mech hunter.

My tactics really depend on the team i'm with, and the speed of the battle, but flexability is always a good thing to me. I'm hoping that PGI will release more fast Jump capable mediums in the near future.

I play my cent as a fast striker, using speed to to keep myself at the range I want to fight at. Its easy to break off if the action gets to intense.

I play Treb. My personal favorite is the TBT-5N. Four medium lasers and an LRM10 and one ton of ammo. Generally burn through the ammo as I close and support fire. Then no other choice but try to support fire with the lasers. Usual tactic is to run in behind an ally and pop out shooting. That might not appeal to everyone. But it has worked well. I'm working on the third variant. After I get my elite skills. I'll buy double heatsinks for the TBT-5N and upgrade it's firepower.

I use my CN9-AL as a swift energy brawler, I use my CN9-D as a high firepower flanker, ambusher, and harasser. The CN9-D in particular has shown me that people don't look at their tactical maps much, no ECM and I walk right up behind them unchallenged. And when I'm in a big mech, I'm guilty of it too.

the centurion and trebucket are too big.

if you carry less guns you should also be a smaller target.

I pilot a CN9-AL. XL 275, 2 LL, 2 ML, 2 SSRM2, 17 DHS, armor maxed everywhere with very little off the legs.

I'll always be in the top 3 unless I royally **** up and get caught alone / out of position. Not counting those games, I'll rarely ever do less than 400 a game. My best has been 999.

I'll try to stick with the heavies and once the fight starts I'll assist them, try to go for the enemy long range people if my heavies are holding up in the brawl, or try to draw away enemies by poking at them from a side with my 2LL and then just leaving. Games I dislike most are the ones where both teams just poke at each other since all I have for that is my 2LL. Those are the games I'm most likely to try to draw enemies out of their line.

There's nothing I can't beat in a 1v1 bar the very high damage point blank stuff like AC/40 builds, and even those I can usually handle.

I love my mediums! I've got 6 in my mech bays right now (plus two Atlases and one Raven). I like the Hunchbacks because of the flexibility they can provide. I can boat ballistic, lasers or missiles and various combinations in-between I can kit them out to fill just about any role that I want to play. The Cent's I'm running are less flexible for me, but maybe that's because I just started working through them and I haven't fully figured out what works for me.

In general, I like mediums because often the threat assessment of my mech is much lower than the heavies and assaults, leaving me more freedom in the brawl to maneuver and bring effective firepower to spare. It is a balance I have to walk because if I get caught out alone or isolated, I'm dead meat. I've seen whole teams stop whatever they're doing to cook my mech because its such a easy target in those situations. However if I can control the type of attention I gather on the battlefield, I can be a real asset to the team and rack up very good points by the end of the game.

I'm in my 4SP grinding to Elite Status and was pleasantly surprised to discover I had a K:D ratio over 1 on it. My favorite thing about the Hunchie is that I can scout alright and not be worried when I'm forced to engage a light or medium. In a light, heavy, or assault it's basically a fight to the death. I can't run away and enemy reinforcements will close in to finish me. If I win the engagement I'm either heavily damaged (in a light) or have armor stripped away on one part of my mech (heavy/assault). In a medium I can take out a light without much problem and running from another medium or enemy reinforcements is actually feasible. It's nice not having to be skittish or be forced into a "Last Stand" mentality at every engagement.

I love my mediums!

Hunchies and Centaurs mainly, but have a few descent loadouts for Trebs as well.

Not sure why anyone would think mediums are useless.
They offer a great mix of speed (90KPH+) and power (Minimum 3 lasers 2 missiles).
You just can't try and run it like an assault.

Stick with the your heavies and strike when an opportunity presents itself.
And your heavies will appreciate your help with any annoying lights that decide
to try and dance around with them.

I'm usually in the 500 - 700 range damage wise. I wouldn't consider that useless!

Usually in my Hunchy SP, or Cent followed by my X-5. Heavy I tend to take my Flame. Hate how the treb handles; for a medium its pathetic.

My unit "The Crows" runs Mediums and heavies so in 4 mans if you see a group of us together thats whats going on. Its needed lately to help make MM a bit more Diverse at least 50% of the time.

I love my cents, as far as tactics go, it depends on the situation, often i will work with either the heavy's or the lights. With heavy's i work as a hit and run/ back stabber. With the lights, again i hit and run, but i can also be more "tanky" at times working as a distraction for the bigger slower guys to follow (really they love to ponder slowly after a med even with like 3 lights shooting them, it's great) as they get taken appart.

In terms of defence, I can often pull back with a light mech(or often another med) to bring enough firepower to scare off/destory those couple of light base cappers.

In short you work wth the team, running solo is not a smart option.

Medium mechs are some of the best tanks in the game right now. The amount of firepower my centurian can absorb while still shelling out 400-500 dmg puts an atlas to shame. These numbers are from 8 mans too! I am not sure where the community misconception comes in that medium mechs are worthless or that tonnage means auto-win. Now if I were to load a slow *** engine in my medium and try to match the firepower of a heavy or assault that would be a different case.

besides the fact many don't see my medium mechs as a threat to them, they are maneuverable faster then most heavy's and assults and have good armor and good to amazing firepower. Trick is to use them right, ie just going blow for blow with a atles will get you killed. I like to sit with a atles or other assult, they role in on someone and I help the guy out. Mech dies fast and we move on. And atles soaks up the return fire mostly.

I have also worked in packs of mediums which has also been effective One of my favorite moments was me in my Cent and a hunchback both running about 90 in lower city encountered a atles and a hunchback. We where not on any coms or even talking over chat. We both did know how to use the medium class and circled the mechs keeping buildings for cover between us and them. taking shots at every opportunity. this kept the 2 mechs guessing where to shoot. We even would reverse our circle to screw with them and keep them confused. They both died and we received minimal damage.

I dont think mediums are in a bad place. Faced an 8man team full of hunchbacks of varying configuration and they pretty much melted our ***** and faces. they are fast(relatively speaking) and pack a lot of firepower.
