Ohh, So there is a shared max??? You can't use up tonnage to add extra armor? I was hoping i could spare a few tons and add armor to certain mechs..

after looking at more info.. It is looking like cat's are more manuverable and can use jump-jets looking to take attacks of oppertunity..

jaeg's less manuverable, perhaps heavier and more firepower?

As a general rule of thumb, the best thing to do when making a mech is max out all the armor, and then strip it from the legs until your remaining tonnage is a whole number or a half ton incriment. Biggest exception to this is light mechs, where you will want full armor on your legs.

Catapults are very solid all round mechs. Many many viable builds on them. Their biggest weakness is the size of their cockpit, making them the easiest target to headshot.

Jagermechs are less manuevarible compared to catapults (as is every other heavy), but you can still achieve a similar speed to the cats.

Their biggest advantage is the placement of their arms. Since they are very high up on the mech you are able to use cover very effectively, easily firing over it while protecting the majoirty of your mech. What makes the Jager a special snowflake is that it is currently the only mech in the game that can bring dual AC20's and an XL engine, giving it the speed it needs to get into brawling range.

A mech's max armor is determined by its tonnage.
None of the stock mechs come with max armor. You can almost aways add a ton or four more armor.

However, front and rear torsos share a maximum.
So a mech might say:
Left torso 50/80
Left torso rear 10/30 (or something' I forget how its displayed).(the point is the max is 80 minus the front armor in this hypothetical).
So you can add to front or back or redistribute, but front and back combined cannot exceed the total max (80 in my example).
Arms/legs/head don't share with anything. So if it says
Left leg: 50/60 you can add more armor (10 points) to that leg.

(Armor is one of thefive buttons: looks like a little mech picture without the "+" symbol in the mechlab. Between engines and jpgrades).

32 points of standard armor per ton.
32 x 1.12 points of ferro fibrous per ton.
(As you can see, ferro fibrous isn't usually worth 14 crits' it doesn't change the max).

That was a kickass post.

Dont forget about cataphracts, probably the strongest heavy right now. 3D is a beast of a mech.

My muromets will **** any CTF-3D like an armless woman in a dark alley in the ghetto. Though it seems practically the same in my opinion the ILYA is by far the best phract and i have em mastered. I also love running my 5 ppc CTF-1X warm but powerful:http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=41&l=998bf1fe983bc15c41d9f96b13d3e06ef9018f25

well thanks again for the great info.... I guess the only option is to try both!

Q, Does the Catapult K2 (ballistics model) the stock one does not have jump jets, Can you install them on this one? Or is that one of the minuses of that particular chasis.

No jump jets for the K2.

The only thing an Ilya can do that a 3D cannot that actually matters is take 3UAC5's. Iyla is a great mech, but it is still inferior to the 3D, because of its lack of jump jets and fewer laser hardpoints. This is all on paper for min maxing though, an Ilya can perform just as well as a 3D, all depends on the pilot, as it does for every mech.
