what isn't linear is size (also affecting hit rate). the size between light and medium mechs a huge gap

Start adding a medium "quirk" of lighter engines till beyond 300. This would allow the meds to get to 100km/h without paying too much in tonnage but speeds beyond that would be the realm of light mechs as it should be.
That would be a bit extreme. The other option is to stop giving them such huge frontal profiles and large side torsos. This would let them fit xl engines in without being the easiest mechs to kill in the game.
I don't think most mechs are too slow. Heavies get to 86km/h really easily while still having decent weapon loadout. And assaults have so much spare tonnage and armor that I would really never want to see them faster than they already are. They get to take standard engines and still match glass cannon heavies for firepower.
Its mostly mediums that get the short end of the stick.

oh i meant within the same engine size. as the mech gets heavier it gets slower using the same engine

Until Clan XL with immunity to side torso destruction death comes along and screws up all traces of balance...

True enough. Only problem is that the only medium I really like all that much is the hunchback which can't fit more than a 260

Trying to make all mechs faster due to high alphas is a band-aid and does not address the issue just tries to compensate for it.

Well higher speed leads to lower alphas because more weight is taken up by the engines rather than the weapons.

It can but not always. I would imagine that people looking for faster mechs would be using XL. Going from a 250STD to a 320XL is tonnage neutral. Yes you are more vulnerable using a XL but your alpha would most likely be unchanged.
I see this proposed change as making lights obsolete with the artificial speed caps. I just think there are other options that would better balance these issues.

Perhaps you people who think you're too slow should just balance your build. You can't load our your weapons to maximum, sacrificing your speed, and then complain that your mechs are too slow.

Standard Assault movement in BT was 3/5 (which translates to 54 kph).
Heavies were 4/6 (65 kph)
Mediums 5/8/5 (86 kph)
Lights 6/9/6 (97 kph) or 8/12 (130 kph)
The stock speeds are actually spot on, but the speeds we see in-game are just too damn high.

Might be right but that really is a pilot skill tree issue.

I've always wondered why the Atlas was penalized...I'm guessing it was due to game balance (like the lights being scaled too small). Atlas should be 54kph but its 48.6kph in game (w/o speed tweak).
