Im sure this has probably been asked before, but after just getting blown up by my own Gauss ammo, i'm a bit miffed.
Isnt Gauss ammo just a big lump of steel, and the damage comes from the speed & accleration of it, rather than an explosive element.

It is the gun, not the ammo that explodes.

Since the Gauss Rifle fires solid metal slugs, with neither propellant nor explosive, Gauss Rifle magazines are not susceptible to ammunition explosions. However, if the weapon itself is struck by enemy fire, the capacitors that power the electromagnets will release their stored energy, with an effect similar to an ammo explosion. (In game terms, a critical hit on a Gauss Rifle is equivalent to a 20-point ammo explosion.)

Gauss ammo is non volatile.
The gun itself is a bomb waiting to happen.

The gun sort of sucks for this reason, since it has a miserable 3 HP and takes up eight trillion slots.
If you plan on brawling, drop an AC/20 in there instead.

Cheers guys.
I get a few kills with the Gauss, but never knew it was the gun that actually exploded.... It seems to be a great weapon for finishing off people at range, and i also love the noise it makes
Im running a Cata at the moment. I love ballistic stuff but it's so heavy, all i can run with atm is Gauss, 50 shots and ERL Laser.

Dieing to a gauss rifle explosion will be referred to as "ammo" in your after death screen. Rest assured it was the rifle that blew up and not your ammo.
When a rifle gets destroyed theres a chance (90%) it will explode for 20 points of damage.

For the same reasons that your cell phone is fully capable of blowing your hand off just highly unlikely to do so. It's storing a massive amount of energy and when damaged that energy has to go somewhere.
