Is everyone expecting there to be friendly fire? Should there be? How concerned are players about the possibility of griefers?

[NEODYM] “Will there be friendly fire? Will there be a way to play on servers without FF?”
[GARTH] “There is friendly fire; though we have looked at options for non-friendlyfire matches, we have no concrete plans to do so at this time. We have found that having FF on encourages more thoughtful and planned play, resulting in everyone having more fun.
Plus, you get to leg Paul when the game starts.

Poorly titled thread, but it seems this is another FF discussion.
Yes, it should be on. Target acquisition is part of warfare. Know what you're firing on before commuting to the act. You are responsible for all friendly fire incidents.

Duh I'm an *****. I should have known this would have already come up. I assume there will be some sort of reporting system or automatic stat tracking where if someone is constantly shooting friendlies they can either get suspended, or just punished via c-bill penalty.
I just imagine that FF will be even more annoying when an errant friendly PPC rips into your custom mech and knocks out that very expensive gauss rifle that you saved all your c-bills for.

As for how a person who hits friendlies too often, there's been little word on what metrics they'll use (if any), but if things like IFF jamming come along down the line, its purpose is to confuse players as to the side the player is on, and as such being fired on by a friendly is still an offense, but done so not by someone with malicious intent; just a poor ability to recognize friend/foe.

It's one thing if PGI credits me the damages worth +25% and then charges the responsible party 200% of the cost of damages (take from game earnings and then pilot's bank, even take them into the red if need be) But there definitely needs to be a system that can accurately determine repeated friendly fire that seems malicious and address that person accordingly.
You'll NEVER rid yourself of children who play online games, so it's always something you have to deal with.

Just had an evil thought. What if one core breach triggered another in the 'mech standing near it?

Whilst there is of course potential for griefing and other related issues from friendly fire, for the most part they are self regulating because griefing allies can simply be tagged (either by the game or in your own mind) as enemies and gunned down along with everything that is a standard target. Further to this in MWO's proposed meta game the griefer can be billed for the cost of repairs and or fined C-bills for repeated infractions.
Of course there are the chronically psychotic that will need policing from systems outside the game world, but for the most part the above will create a system that will rapidly teach people that Friendly fire is bad and will heavily discourage casual griefers.
