In alot of the various favourite mech threads, and in others, the Marauder is mentioned almost as frequently as Clanners talk about their Madcats. Obviously people have different opinions and I don't question peoples preferences to things I don't find appealing, often understanding why others would like such a thing, but the Marauder has me scratching my head.

I guess it has a half decent armament for a heavy, but otherwise I don't see it. It's not very fast, and no JJs to off set that speed unlike the Cataphract for example. Also the looks aren't very pleasing, the torso is ok, and in some pictures the usually gibbon-like arms look decent too, but the massive legs and the oversized top gun (it's only an AC/5 afterall) just throw it all off.

Not looking for an essay, just a quick reason why it has such a following, without just saying 'But dude! It's UNSEEEEEEEEEEEN!!'.

Cheers, CJ.

It's a very pretty mech, as well as being one of the oldest images of the Battletech universe (well, a stolen image). Iconic as heck, and a decade older than the Timber Wolf.

To be fair a lot of the Marauders appeal comes from it's value in the 3025 iteration of Battletech. back then it was 'the' heavy brawler, well able to hold it's own. later models were also upgraded to keep up with newer designs.

In the fluff it always seemed to be the heavy mech that mechwarriors aimed to get, or were rewarded with once they reached a certain skill level. In the right hands it is deadly.

Ok I'm kind of getting the picture, although playing MW3 and 4, I'm pretty new to the Battletech universe. I hadn't realised it had that amount of history, since looking up stuff now I just see everything so far, not knowing when they were introduced etc. I guess I'm getting abit swamped in reading up about everything.

To steal a phrase from the movie Kellys Heroes.. "Its a beutiful Mech man!"

Its one of THE most iconic mechs for old Battletech players (along with Warhammer, Rifleman, Locust and Battlemaster).
I love it!

in it's time, the marauder was capable of holding it's own against many assault class mechs, and being a deadly foe to other heavies and lighter chassis. One of the variants I remember dropped the AC, and either added jump jets, or a large laser and heatsinks. This removed it's ammo limitation, and had they added benefit of removing that chance of ammo explosion.

PPC's were decent range direct fire weapons and had very high damage-tonnage ratio, and itpacked two of them. Aside from its look, it was a well put together brawler. Compare to the Orion, with the same armor, and speed, and it carries 8 tons of ammunition, hitting any of which will seriously impair if not destroy the mech.

I've been trying to remember the name of that movie for ages! So I thank you for that haha. I guess coming into Battletech with Mechwarrior 3 (free copy in a magazine in the early 2000's!) I've missed out on alot of stuff, never really been into internet communities either previously, so never got caught up at all till now.

That's a nice technical summary, cleared up some doubts of it's capabilities, thanks.

Theyd have to vastly change it to put it in the game though yea?

Most likely yes, but many many people still hold out a slim hope to see the original look of the Marauder.

Sleek bird walker that offers great direct fire support.

The Maruader is popular because Macross had good Mecha design between Shoji Kawamori and Kazutaka Miyatake and it does have that biped that isn't human look to it too. One reason I always figured the Madcat was popular too.

Unless they ask whoever holds the robotech or whoever that is license really really nice....

but who knows maybe we'll get lucky

Big West owns Macross. I would think HG doesn't really own anything anymore...so the theory goes.

I'd rather have a Warhammer or Battlemaster, I'm not fond of the elegant yet fragile looking Marauder.

Not stolen. Fasa got permission directly from the the original artist to use it. Unfortunately, so did Harmony Gold, and they wanted to prevent anyone else from distributing its likeness.

HG right to distribute had laps when CGL attempted to regain the 'unssen' but a sealed legal agreement going back to the original FASA vs HG case was written in some murky laguage that somehow allows HG to retain their distribution rights to the Macross/Robotech property in the US. I'm sure it can be overturned if someone put up the money for the court case but untill then, HG's lawyers are acting like a junkyard dog with a bone.

Get your information correct. FASA stole nothing. They had licenses. The problem came from two different Japanese companies giving rights to two different US companies. They agreed never to use the art work again because they never wanted to deal with it again.

I love chicken leg mechs, humanoid not as much, and the tri weapon setup just goes one step further to make it an amazing looking mech. The madcat is awesome too but marauder would still takes #1 spot. Atleast they added the catapult , i'm happy with that for now.
