Look.. the fact that you got the pop shot doesnt mean you killed them. You did 580~590ish damage.. thats quite low for one..even two LRM20s being fired constantly at enemies.
If you want to do a real test, go to the practice map with your LRM20s, find the atlas, shoot at it from 500m in the front. See just how much ammo you have to toss at it to kill it. The damage from firing at one atlas alone should net you nearly 300 damage as the missile spread hits the RT/LT/CT/Head/Arms at random even with artemis.
That being said.. yes, LRMs are quite decent at scoring kills because they hit the entire mech chest area with multiple hits (20 in the case of LRM20) and thus its 20 chances to score the killing blow over the shots the rest of your team is pumping in at the same time.
I had to drop my quad LRM15+Artemis setup in my stalker 5S because even with 6 tons of ammo I was unable to drop an atlas without having to spend more than 2 tons of ammo on it. I once downgraded it to quad LRM5s just for lulz and got more kills because i was spamming them nonstop... i was stealing kills from the team with them. Sure helps to make cash dont it?
