*excuse me sir but i believe that most mechwarriors with any manners or in game edicate at least try to hold this game to a little bit of a higher standard than Call of Duty. Go learn some meta game and know that sometimes all your doing is ******* everyone off.
I read that with my best British accent... in my head. *Tip of the hat to your magnificence, ol' chap!*
Seriously though, this really isn't that big a deal although I definitely know where you're coming from. Right now it's one of the best counters to the sniper lines that are all the rage these days. If I'm a light, and I get to within a few hundred yards of the enemy base, I tend to hit it just so the enemy team hears "Our base is being captured." The idea is to pull some of their line back so the rest of my team can start hammering away or flanking them. It's a valid counter to zerg-on-zerg sniper warfare.
Also, most matches should be about information warfare (not just grouping up in a big ball and running at the enemy zerg). Even on the large maps with a bunch of slow movers, it's easy enough to spot enemies rushing your base with enough time to allow your heavies to pull an about-face and still get back in time to defend. The trick is keeping a eye out.
Haven't seen any enemies and you're halfway across the map? You might wanna send a detachment back to base... Jus' sayin'
All in all, I think this is a non-pressing issue that will be addressed over the next few content patches (new game modes, etc.)
