These 16 entities established in BT canon for use in MW:O for 3050 are what is meant by that term "Clan".

To put it more bluntly, if you are not representing a sub-element of the following Clans in the 3050-3056 timeline and want to establish your own Clan named team NOT associated with canon Clans, you should drop the term "Clan" (unless you profess a Scottish heritage for your group) and then go to the Mercs section and recruit for your team there. Non-canon, non-MW/BT groupings called clans are player teams and belong instead in the mercs section. They do not belong in the Factions: Clans section.

This is not a regular game like COD and Modern Warfare 3, etc, that many are used to playing. It is an IP with about 40 years of rich history. Stick to the canon vis-a-vis the factions and related entities. Making up your own puts MW:O squarley in the realm of a regular shooter. There is enough flexibility to name your player group a Star or Galaxy of a given canon Clan.

Clan Ice Dragon? So not canon. Ice Dragons, however, is a great Merc name.

I believe that PGI said somewhere (far too lazy to look) that the canon clans/merc units etc will not be allowed to be player run or player owned. As well many of the clans are simply waiting till the in-game clans release and they will join up with the established clans. For example the merc corp/clan I am a part of, we plan on joining up with Clan Wolf (canon one, not the player one) when they are released and able to be fought for.

Imo is it a big deal? neg not really. people are going to do what they want anyway

Quote

The Clans of BattleTech were originally the self-exiled remnants of the Star League Defense Force army, after Stefan Amaris brought about the downfall of the Star League. General Aleksandr Kerensky led his forces beyond the Inner Sphere because he believed that a terrible war was brewing between the Great Houses; a war that even the once mighty Star League army was powerless to stop. The exiles evolved into a warrior-based civilization that would sweep through the Inner Sphere like a whirlwind 250 years later.

I am going to call non-canon outfits clans and there is nothing you can do about it. Who cares about useless ancient fluff?

Not to mention the fact that most of them didn't take part in the invasion.

According to Lore there were 20 originals Clans. Now we are down to 17. Clan Wolverine was Annihilated, Clans Widowmaker and Mongoose were Absorbed. But, there is nothing to stop anyone from forming a unit and calling it a Clan unit. The only thing that will determine if they are recognized is the BattleTech community.

I am willing to be open minded and accept any Clan as long as they follow the ideas laid down by Kerensky. I will not recognize and Unit who calls themselves a Clan and does not follow this.

Everyone is waiting for Faction Warfare. Everyone I have talked to, and many post I have read, wants the ability to tweak the lore by gaining control of planet that a house did not have before. According to Lore the Clans do not take anymore IS worlds after the truce, except for the Falcon's who do get pushed back. I would figure the Clans would like the idea of taking IS world along the Clan-IS border. I am sure most of you would also like that idea.

I feel It would be very interesting if other Clan Units were involved these battles. Or if PGI let these Other Clans bid on attack for worlds along the Clan-Clan, or Clan-IS, borders.

The biggest hurdle is whether or not Mercenary Units will be able to pledge allegiance or form alliances with Clan Factions in a similar fashion that they form alliances with House Factions.

I do not feel this should be allowed. I do not know of any instance in this era were a Clan hired a Merc unit.

No reason? Over 30 years of Battletech lore wants a word with you.

The reason people can't make made up clans is that those clans don't get accepted by the community, which pretty much defeats the purpose of the exercise.

That's a matter of perspective, I'm sure there will be no end of clan insert name here in the merc corp bracket.
One because they can, they don't really care about the Btech lore fans say and at this time PGI don't care.
The other reason is the merc corp aspect will be the best aspect of CW

Yeah it should be a good thing if people will stop naming their Unit with a Clan Prefix/Suffix,

but alas, probably everone can go name their merc corp just the way they like it, because PGI also allows to use canon character names as accountnames.

A lot of the online gamers are used to the word Clan, so they will keep using it, and also in the end it is not a real big deal, because the name of the units will not change the gameplay or whatsoever.

It is only annoying to us Battletech lore fans..

I have no doubts that there will be merc corps like that, but those will be merc corps, not BT Clans. Posting in the "Factions Clans" section implies that unit is associated with one of BT Clans though.
