A few of you may have noticed that the current meta game is dominated by sniping by jump jet equipped mechs. The was largely made possible by the recent patch which fixed previous issues around PPC’s and ballistic weapons. As annoying as the poptarting is, breaking ballistics again in an effort to fix the problem would likely be a suboptimal solution.

There is I think one relatively small change that would solve the problem however. What if the zoom mechanics where changed while jumping? Obviously there wouldn’t be any changes to overall targeting mechanic, and you would want to allow jump jet equipped mechs to easily target folks at close range while they are jumping, but what if we were to one of two things:

1) Zoom doesn’t work while jumping- This has the benefit of limiting jump sniping to short and medium ranges which levels the playing field. It also gives a non jumping mech and advantage against a jumping one at range. Of course if feels a bit artificial- after all why would zoom stop working when you fire your jets?
2) Zoom has “jitter” while jumping- This would be limited to only Zoom, if you jump without zoom your target reticle would be rock solid as normal, but if you jump whole zoomed the picture would jump around a bit. This has the same effect as option A above, but feels a bit less artificial.

IMO either of these two changes would limit all the pogoing and would level the playing field a bit without having to nerf PPC’s or anything else drastic like that. Even better, either one is a relatively minor change to implement.

Thoughts?
