Much the same thought process here, as what Foust describes (maybe not quite a "nerdgasm" though...). I've been accumulating equipment with an eye toward ending up with a multi-use cockpit. I'm really hoping they provide the graphics flexibility, hotkey assignments, etc., necessary for us to be unleashed. If they do, you will see some very cool things get built.

The downside I see is that every mech has a different view parameters. So having more then one screen for the view would be tricky, since lets say you could essentially pilot a Jenner and see the same things as an Atlas. Different mechs have different windows, and from what I read in the books and lore, there was no real HUD in the mechs, It was just the helmet visor overlay on the windows.

It's not pointless, but it is a luxury.
And you my friend are a quickly dying breed. CRTs are pretty much dead at this point...you can buy an LCD far cheaper, pay less shipping, and it fits on a desk way easier than a bulky CRT. But hey, if that's what you like I'm not gonna stop you. Just please don't try to stop the rest of us from getting what we'd like just because it's a feature you wouldn't use.
CRTs give better colours, though.
Less headaches too.
And they're actually in revival, not decline.
Biggest question would still be if this game would support it or not.

Here's my 0.02 on the whole monitor/visual interface issue:
I would like to see eyefinity support for the main view. I would also like to see control groups and multifunction displays that could be un-docked from the main view a-la MS Flight Simulator and moved to other monitors.
This way, a person with just one monitor, a mouse and a keyboard, has all the same information at their disposal (all the displays and controls on the main view) and all the same controls (via hotkeys and such)...
However, someone who wants to set up as immersive of an experience as possible they would be able to set the main view to a 3-monitor eyefinity group showing the front and left/right views from the cockpit. They could un-dock the control groups and MFDs and set them to a number of other screens, and if those screens were touch screens they may even be able to use the controls on the screen itself.
I should point out that CyBerkut already suggested a setup like this on another thread, but I was thinking the exact same thing in the last few days. I just discovered a few days ago this game is being made and I am INCREDIBLY physched up about it... I used to play Kesmai Battletech Online back in the late '90s, I've got a huge library of Battletech source books, game systems, novels, toys, etc. I'm really hoping that we'll see the ability to set this up as an incredibly immersive simulator experience, as I think that's what a huge number of us Battletech fans would really like to see after all these years. It should be possible to set it up in a way where more "arcade" or "action" - oriented gamers can enjoy it and experience success with their own style of play, while allowing those of us who have been ******* after an awesome Battlemech simulator to have something we can play for years and years to come (and trust me, if you pull this off right people will still be playing it or its sequels 10 years from now.)

Sorry for the double post... watch this video. THIS is an example of what we should be able to do in this game. Start at 2:14 if you want to get to the meat of it without the parts that are irrelevant to the idea itself.

Im all for multiple monitor support. The immersion factor would be amazing. I personally have a rig designed in mind already, before stumbling blindly upon this wonderful news about another facet to the MechWarrior universe. I play other games, but this discovery is so epic! But, I digress! My rig would have a triple 46" monitor setup (with a couple of 24" monitors for information purposes), though I would forgo the eyefinity if this supports multimonitor gameplay.
The potential is giving me the chills!

Point me to a new CRT monitor and I'll be surprised. IPS panels have better color quality, and AMOLED panels better still. Not to mention LCDs are more energy efficient and LED panels moreso. AMOLED panels are supposed to be out at normal consumer prices within 5 years, and for now IPS panels give you better image quality than a CRT monitor, and some TFT panels have faster refresh and response times than CRT monitors to my knowledge.
And do any CRT monitors under 26" support 1920x1080p? I haven't seen one.
Oh and LCDs and LEDs don't have to worry about image burn.
All the above said, I'll be going with a triple 24" 2ms response time LCD setup w/ eyefinity on my next rig.

As long as it isnt a "hack" Im all for using/supporting what ever kind of tech you have hiding in the payback box "you shot me in the @$*... Ill get you now" /equip <epic toy name here>
It seems as though I play nice untill someone gives me a reason to just obliterate them (COD im using the FAL then I get waxed by a pair G18s a couple times... ok... /equip SCAR with FMJ ... other team obliterated)

I hope there will be some implementation of Tri-screen solution. Then I would built my own cockpit
One screen in the middle for HUD (20'' - 30'')
One screen left for battlegrid /Map / communication (15-19'')
One screen right for damage report weapon status, life support etc. (15-19'')
Customization of additional screen could be really cool, allowing to scale and move the stuff on the screen (also color change)
I hope there will be also a possibility to deactivate virtual cockpit (3D cockpit) allowing only to see projection type HUD, so one can use his own stuff (real cockpit)
Maybe an output data (oneway) of essential stuff velocity, heat (as value), radar status ("1" or "0"), amount of ammunition etc.
This Information could be used for example for subprogram and additional stuff screen etc. allowing to built own cockpit.

I vote for Eyefinity support mostly. I like a good ol' 5760X1080 resolution so I can see from my peripheral vision.

As mentioned before though, Eyefinity turns multiple monitors into one large monitor. While this is preferable to nothing at all, true multiple monitor support so that you could present customizable information displays to different monitors, or represent actual windows (if so inclinded to develop a full home sim), or to even have readouts everywhere and just one for combat - Thats the difference. If supported where I could use three monitors representing windows and then have an additional monitor or two for informational displays, that would be ideal for me. Not necessarily for anyone else, but thats how I envision it. Perhaps even a monitor dedicated solely to radar function....
