So I was merrily being torn apart by an atlas in my cata 4x when my gauss bearing arm gets shot off. Suddenly I died to ammo explosion. I'm running XL so presumably the rifle exploded into my already damaged L Torso, blowing up the xl engine.
Now my querstion is, should I put CASE in the side torsos? Would this prevent incoming 'ammo explosion' damage? How exactly does the crit damage transfer work here?
I though (apparently incorrectly) that arms didn't transfer damage, only got blown clean off.
Also: that I can't put CASE in the arms is dumb, irrespective of TT canon.

Hey Hey,
pretty much everything considering C.A.S.E. and ammo explosions is explained here http://mwowiki.org/w...ment_%28CASE%29
one of the most interesting parts for your problem might be this:
"XL Engines
CASE prevents damage from traveling to the center torso by containing the damage within the side torso itself. While this prevent the center torso from taking internal damage, the side torso is destroyed. When the side torso of a 'Mech with an XL Engine installed is destroyed, the engine itself is also destroyed and the 'Mech disabled with it. Currently, there is no benefit in installed CASE onto 'Mechs with XL Engines."

1. If you're using an XL engine, CASE won't do you any good - it only prevents damage from passing THROUGH the side torso to the center torso.
2. Whether or not there is an ammo/Guass explosion depends upon whether or not a "critical hit" is scored. If your arm is destroyed simply because its internal structure health has been depleted, the arm will fall off, but you won't take any additional damage from the ammo in that arm (because that ammo itself hasn't been destroyed). If, however, your arm blows off as a RESULT of an ammo explosion due to a critical hit, the amount of damage above and beyond your arm's health will be transferred to the side torso to which the arm is connected (with any leftover damage traveling to the center torso, if the damage exceeds the health of the side torso)
Example 1: Your arm's armor has been depleted and you're down to internal structure (for the sake of this example we'll say your arm's internal structure has 24 points of health). You get hit in that arm with a dual AC20 shot for 40 damage. Neither of the hits records a "critical" hit to one of the components inside the arm. The arm, taking damage exceeding it's health, is destroyed and falls off of your mech, but no ammo explodes.
Example 2: Your arm's armor has been depleted and you're down to internal structure. You get hit in the arm with dual AC20s, however, this time, one of the AC20 rounds scores a cricital hit on the Gauss Rifle in that arm. In addition to the damage done by the AC20s, your Gauss will explode causing even more damage, which will then be transferred to the side torso.
...and regarding putting CASE in an arm - that is the clan version of case (which can be placed in any component) and will probably make an appearance in this game after the clan invasion (post launch/early fall).

It will stop any spillover damage to the CT or legs. It will not prevent side torsos from being damaged. If you have an XL engine, it will not prevent damage to it.

Nope. Both happens.

The Inner Sphere would agree with you that it is dumb. But it is a limitation of their technology.
And Canon aside...it makes sense. This prevents players from storing ammo in disposable arms. Ammo explosions are one of the vulnerabilities of ballistics and missiles. Case in arms would make that vulnerability almost completely irrelevant.
That being said, I have done away with CASE on my gauss builds. The damage is not guaranteed, and even when it explodes, it is only 20 points. Since it does not even negate the damage, only contains it, I have not seen a huge gain with it myself. For me, I'd rather have the extra space and weight for something else.
The only CASE (lol) I can see for using it is if you are storing ammo in the right or left torsos and don't have an XL engine.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say it'll stop spillover damage to the legs, but it'll stop damage from an ammo explosion from the legs spreading into the CT.
Really, CASE is useful for any mech that has a standard engine and any 1 or more of the following:
-ammo in the arms
-ammo in the side torso
-ammo in the legs
-a gauss in an arm or side torso
