I understand what you're saying, but if you hopped on the free NGNG TS3 server and dropped with some people you would see that amongst an organized team the recon roll is badly needed and much appreciated.
I already wrote this in a later post: Yes, playing in a team with teamspeak is a solution and I do it. But usually don't have the time to play for more than half an hour at a time and that means it is too little time to join a tream. 8-player groups are totally impossible for me. That leaves me two or three times a week playing with a team. 90% of the time I have to PUG.

I should have mentioned this in the original article.

I have found success in my scout harassing and trolling the enemy.

For example, I will swing a wide circle around the enemy and wait until they are engaged with my team. I will then rake some of their rear guard with fire to get their attention, or cap their base. Either way, usually 3-4 go to chase me. Hooray! Because even if they catch and kill me, they've split their team in half and often the half that stays behind gets slaughtered by my team, followed a few minutes later with the half that DID follow me joining their comrades as I lead them back to my full team.

So please, people, keep chasing the squirrel. You know you want to.
