All depends on the mech the role you use it for and how you yourself play.

I used to run standard engines on more mechs than I do these days, Things like my Jager S used to have a 250 standard now it rocks a 280 XL. I was finding that games that I lost my side torso's in I was practically combat ineffective when it happened either, either being totally shredded or being near out of ammo. So I put in a 280 XL, go a little faster carry more ammo, has worked well so far.

Victors and QDs and my brawler Highlander 733C all run XLs, I find torso twisting keeps them alive and the heavier firepower and faster speeds I get out of them are worth the trade.

infact I only use Standards in my Atlases my Awesome 8Q (my 9m has an xl) my Hunchbacks and my Stalkers, 6 mechs out of 30

If you aren't rocking an XL325 on your Highlander you're doing it wrong.

It gives you space for high firepower + 64 kph + decent manoeuvrability + 3 internal heat-sinks.

If you're going to mount a STD and crawl along at 50 kph you might as well hop in an Atlas.

All my HGNs run 300 STD. After speed tweak it goes 59+change. And it's nice to still be able to contribute if you lose a side.

I'm still learning the game but I ran into this issue today. I have CASE and several rounds of UAC-5 ammo in my R/LT. With the XL engine, I'm dead as soon as thats been lighting off. I was just looking on here for info. looks like I'll be switching to STD (sigh). What a waste. Thanks for the post.

For the love of god drop the CASE! Even in a standard I would never, ever run MG, AC, or Missile ammo in my torsos even with a standard. In TT/P&P there was (some limited) reasons to run with ammo in your torso, but not MWO...

To the thread in general, I almost never lose a side unless I'm so beaten up that even if the hit had gone to CT I'd still have died. So even in my Jagers and Highlanders I'll run XLs. Spiders, Cicadas, Catapult, Jagers, Highlanders... They all run XLs fine if you spread out that damage love...

The only Mech I put a STD engine into is my Atlas, because when the Atlas loses a side torso there's a good chance it can carry on fighting with the other half of its weapons. On the other hand, when I lose a side torso in pretty much any other Mech, it's a targetted attack designed to remove 3/4 of my fire power (e.g. AC20 Muromets). I personally don't feel that the increased weight of an equivalent STD engine is worth it compared to the fire power and speed boost of an XL. When I lose a side torso in a fight it's almost always game over anyway since I've made a positioning mistake that led to my taking such excessive damage.

A brawler should probably use STD engine, provided the pilot is skillful enough to use arms and side torsos to soak hits. Even destroyed side torsos are very useful for soaking hits, since it's 50% damage transfered to the CT.

A sniper or fire support can use XL... they can avoid being targetted first by enemies if your brawlers grab their attention and make them lose situational awareness. Kinda hard to continue scanning hills and ridgelines for enemies when you gotta worry about a brawler crawling up your butt.

XL engines are crap in MWO because of pinpoint aiming. Battletech XL engines are balanced around random hit locations. Pinpoint aiming makes XL engines absolutely terrible on anything but light mechs and certain medium mechs.

IMO XL engines need to be buffed. It should require 4 critical hits to destroy an XL engine (instead of a side torso destruction).

With my suggestion, destroying a side torso would only give you 3 of the 4 required critical hits so you would need to get a 4th critical hit to destroy the mech.

You also can't torso twist to protect yourself in TT.

XL's are just much better for some mechs than they are for others, depending on the hitboxes.

Going fast means never having to lose your AC20 in the first place. So while you are zombie humping with your little pew pew, I will still be going "dakka dakka". At elast until I have have done so 28 times. Then I will being going around pewpewing too..... just faster!

You forgot the Stalker, with an emphatic NO, lol.

Also I mostly agree with your list, with 2 exceptions:
I think the HBK-4SP is a draw. Doesn't get torso'd as easy, and depends on the role. For short range, you run out of room to use that weight overall, but if you wanna pack LRMS, I think it's quite doable.

Also I ran my Trebuchet 7K with an XL exclusively without issues. SO I think it's another that is pure preference.

But think of all that extra armor a sacrificial side torso gives! To me the speed difference doesn't warrant the lack of endurance. But then again I like to get close to my enemies and put my wang on their shoulder... Hit it and quit it works well for some, but it just isnt my style...

hope you named your Wang "Marvin Gaye" then.

There's too much loving for my Wang to dole out to be stuck with just one partner a night!
