I've played about 10 games so far. As with any FTP, I refuse to pay until I can at least understand the basic structure of the game.

I cannot for the life of me find where to buy a mech for ONLY cbils. I've asked in game and was told to click 'owned mechs' then 'buy mech' and then to scroll all the way down. I've done this and I only see mechs with MC/cbil combination prices. So, can someone spell it out all slow like for me?

pOrksOda.

There is no such thing as combination prices. All that you are seeing is the prices for the mech whether you pay for it by cbills or MC. When you go to buy the mech, if you have the MC, it should ask you how you would like to pay for it. Choose Cbills.

Now there are MC only mechs which are the hero mechs but every other mech can be purchased with either cbills OR mc.

I hope this has been helpful.

OK. Go to the "Mechlab" tab on the homescreen. Click on Owned mechs (bottom left). Click on an empty Mechbay. Click the buy Mech button. Buy a mech for C-Bills.

To be fair this game does not make it easy for a newbie, especially one with no prior Battletech experience. Plus bear in mind the money you earn in the first 25 matches is highly inflated, you won't earn that much usually. Choose your first mech carefully, people here are more than happy to help. I screwed up bad, wish I'd checked the forums first. :D

Edit: Looking at it, under the vertical dropdown list of mechs there are three tabs, Buy MC, Buy C-bills and Cancel. And, seriously, ask for help here mate. C-Bills are hard to come by...

If it makes you feel any better, I thought that too when I first started.

It's not as obvious as it could be, IMHO.

Supposedly it is supposed to get better with UI 2.0 late this summer (fingers crossed).

Dude don't beat yourself up. The interface is a pain in the ***. I learned not to long ago that you really can message some one in game by using the friends list. I had no clue. It was by dumb luck and a friend telling me over all chat in a match how to do it.

Forming a group still trips me up.

edit
Oh yeah. You double click the guys name and a chat window opens up.

The new user experience is one of the big things about this still being a beta. At launch there'll be the expected walk-throughs and all that.

Hopefully when UI 2.0 comes out, this will be a lot better I think.

That said, when you go to buy 'mechs, just click the L/M/H/A tabs (different weight classes) and select any 'mech that is not a hero. Once you do that, you should have in the bottom right two buttons: Buy (MC) and Buy (CBill). You want to go with the second one.

Anyway, tough out your remaining trial drops if you can, the game really opens up once you own a 'mech.

One would hope so. I'm a Battletech fan, have lots of novels, played several titles and have been reinstalling MW4 every 6 months or so because I feel the need to stride the land in a giant robot bristling with weaponry all of a sudden. Maybe I'm part Japanese? Anyway, without that knowledge I would have been completely lost. With it, the sometimes confusing UI still made things more difficult than they should be.

Of course the forums here are a goldmine with people ready to help or offer an opinion with a minimum of p155taking but PGI are putting this beta out there in a big way. I came in about a month ago from a facebook ad of all things! I've not been keeping up with the press recently....

Paying money to advertise and draw people in only to instantly alienate them seems very counterproductive. A lot of their market may have taken a look and might not take another. I feel a very simple tutorial might have kept more players in and boosted profits. For us and them. For every p0rks0da that comes here and asks a question how many just get p155ed off and leave for good? And tell thier friends it's sh1te?

How could I ever forget when I started playing this game I thought that you could only buy mechs with MC and bought my first Stalkers with them? It's no biggie, but boy it was funny when I bought the others with C-Bills and was like "no..."

and NEVER use MC on mechs, EVAR. (unless you're rich)

use MC for mech bays and premium time only.

there might be a premium MC color you really want (but the basic Cbill colors are also ok) It's nice to stand out a little, especially if you are playing with RL buddies, makes it a tad easier on them, "Ah there's my buddy, GOLDBOT"

And you might want to use MC on a hero mech but IMO they're overpriced. the mechs you can buy with Cbills are pretty sweet. I'd only buy a Hero mech if i've first mastered the chassis it belongs to in general, knowing that i groove to that chassis before sinking real cash on a hero mech i might totally hate. (don't think any of the hero mechs were used in tourney :P )

So to kind of put it in perspective i've loosely spent... 80 bucks? on this game total and have 25 mech bays, 24 fully mastered mechs (cuz premium time masters mechs quicker) and 3 premium colors, obsidian black, battleship grey and titanium white. purchased all the basic colors with cbills and that gives ya enough colors to dress up your dolls.

on a side note, i tend to only spend Cbills on new mechs and my standard engine collection (excluding double heatsinks and endosteel upgrades). if you keep buying mechs, you won't even need to buy weapons at a certain point, just engines, so you can slip engines that perfectly fill your tonnage allowance after outfitting your mech however you'd like.

Sad but very true

I began with this game back before Microsoft bought into it.
The "improvements / features" that have been added on over
the years are at best a mixed bag. The idea that new people
should have a positive first experience seems to be forgotten.

My issue is this. People complain that there are no tutorial guides. For those people complaining, please open your eyes and refer to the training videos on the MWO WEBSITE. Thank you.

Is it that hard? Must there be a MC/C-bill incentive for you to watch these videos? Sigh... You can lead a stubborn donkey to a drinking hole but you can't make it drink...
