I can handle Long range sniping, That is knowing your weapons and their ranges. My issue is Lights Mechs vs Assault Mechs and the circle of death. Not at all like the books. In the books a Light Mech would be blessed if it could even Crit an Assault Mech, let alone kill an Assault Mech.
That's pretty much exactly the way it is right now in higher ELO. Most lights stand no chance 1 v 1 against a good assault pilot, especially a highlander that can use its jump jets to bring its insta-kill guns to bear.

Remember the way Elo works.
If someone in a light mech is in the same Elo as your assault, it means that on average they are as effective as your assault mech, in their light mech.
How good a pilot do you think it takes to be that effective when you can be killed or crippled in a single alpha strike?
From my understanding, ELO works differently.... it matches by weight class, so the light pilot may be near the top of the charts
within the light category, but there's still little chance they can possibly be half as deadly as a high ranked PPC boat within the assault category. Again, dropping as a high rank player in a light and giving the other side a high ranked player in an assault only gives your team a handicap in the current meta, most of the time. That is, if you're trying to win through direct combat rather than capping.
