And have the names visible to other players.

The fee should be low enough to be reasonable (no PGI pricing- sane pricing, please :)), but high enough to dissuade offensive naming (since those names would be reported and banned).

Honestly, I just want to name my Atlas RS the "Misery" or the "Company", to taunt all the people who bought the latest hero mech.

So that some guy can have "**********" as a mech name and I have to see it? no thanks.

You would always have someone willing to pay to have it done, to grief other (which is what Original Post is suggesting). Aint gonna happen, feel free to keep asking tho.

Once a name was banned it would be added to a list, so no one could change their name to that.

How does showing an enemy name fit into what the radar does? I can understand the radar knowing what mech it is by scanning its hardpoints but how would you explain how your radar would know the enemy's name?

Besides I think that's what paint and camo is for - to make your enemies know and fear you (or laugh).

^ You could deliberately work it into your IFF system somehow :).

I have to ask...

What is the point of anybody else knowing what you name your 'Mech? And why is knowing your 'Mech's name so combat-relevant as to appear on the HUD?

I could see something where for an MC fee, it gets added to the outside of your 'Mech as a decal. But there's no reason to have it appear on anyone's HUD.

Out of Curiosity was there ever a point in which a mechs "given name" could be seen? I have always wondered why you could name it, but no one could ever see it.. I understand peoples misuse of the system, but i don't remember this ever being billed as a kid friendly game.. Lord knows the in game chat obscenities are seen..

People see'ing mech names was the very reason i named my 3L Meep-Meep.....

totaly wasted name.

it would be great if eventually when they figured out how to have a tournament properly scored where the score actually promoted proper play without requiring kill stealling or hit scanning everything, That one of the rewards for the tournament was that your mech name and all got to become a hero variant. Maybe with a few tweaks of course.

we are already able to name our mechs.

are you asking the devs to make our mechs basically into a hero mech? that would be pretty awesome. and let us submit the mechs. and they could pick one to sell

I figured it was just so that the owner could recognize it more quickly in its mechbay.

Renaming our own mechs? I'm pretty sure this is coming with UI 2.0 for free.

Making opponents able to see our names? No - that just makes it harder to quickly see what variant a mech is. The heroes get away with it because they're unique.

Here's a better idea, do it for no fee.

There's no reason the name couldn't be stuffed into the target info in the corner of the screen.

Eh, if the name's separate from the variant, sure. You'd need some name policing and it really wouldn't add much to the enjoyment of the game, but if it could be implemented for no cost, yeah, I suppose.

I think names add a lot of personality to a mech. Seeing a bright green Atlas I say meh, seeing a bright green Atlas named "warboss" and the reference and creativity draw me into the game. Differentiation and customization is important and this game does it exceptionally poorly with how hard it is to see paintjobs through the stupid/unrealistic/lazy haze filter every map is afflicted with.

I'm all for clearing up the haze. I'm just not convinced an extra name is going to make things much more personal, especially when I'm not expecting much from them. The first Yen-Lo named "Penetrator" might be mildly funny, but when you've seen things like that in every match of the day the charm starts to wear off quickly.
