I suggested this before and am suggesting it again.

Give us a lobby system that allows us to go into the lobby and once that game lobby fills up (12 vs12)... The computer will than (randomly) decide how's my of what weight class can be used for (that match).

Example... My Merc unit of 12 goes into the game lobby for a planet we are fighting over and our opponent jumps in with its 12 members. At that point, the game lobby with randomly generate what the mission calls for. It decides that each team must bring 4 assaults, 2 heavies, 4 mediums and 2 lights. Each team is evenly match by weight class but you still have options as to what mech you can bring.

My unit may decide to bring 2 Atlases and 2 Highlander where as the other team may opt for 4 Atlases. You then still don not know exactly what mech types the enemy has but you at least know if your unit has 4 Assaults, so does the enemy.

In the next match the computer may ask that each team brings 6 lights 2 mediums and 4 heavies. Let it be random for each match. By this time, all of us Vets should be able to cover any mech weight class if need be and most of us will gladly let the newer players fill the weight class roles they can while we fill the remainder... As again, we should be able to fill any role by now.

What would this fix? You would not need ELO and it would put a stop to running into all assault or all light mech drops. If the match asked for only 2 assault mech per team. Guess what? You may only have to worry about 2 PPC stalker boats rather that 5 or 6 lol. You would see a wider verity of mechs and this would give lights and medium mech meaning again because that match requests that so many of those mech classes be used.

What if people on one team don't have the specific number of assaults for example :) Does that mean dudes need to use trials ?
And I can probably see a situation in which people are fighting over piloting a certain class xD

I'm sure by the time CW come out, everyone here will have at least 1 assault, heavy, medium and light. And if not... There will always be lone wolf players that will be able to jump into games to fill up the que to fill a 12 man team and I'm sure they too will have most mech class types. 95% of all the members in my Merc unit have at least 1 mech type from each weight class. And most times, you are going to be dropping with players you know so all of you are going to get to know what the other like to play so there should not be much in the way of fighting over who's going to pilot what.

In my humble opinion a lobby system would help this game with its issues of seemingly throwing together matches. It appears these matches only have one thing in mind; to limit the amount of time it takes to get into a game. It takes seconds to find a game. It takes hours to get into a game that is evenly matched. I've been playing mwo for a bit now, and most games are decided by who brought more 20/20 jager mechs or ppc stalkers. Whole lances fill their rosters with these unbalenced mechs and leave me questioning the direction that mwo is heading. Are we putting our time and effort into a game that is only going to end up being a 8 v 8 of jagers and stalkers? How can we counter balance the fact that players instinctively look for the easiest, most effective way to get kills?
I know that mechwarrior is a battletech invention and that battletech is a tabletop game, however I am not familiar with their game system. I have played warhammer 40k, and i know that they have a points system for balancing armies. I've played mechcommander, where each mission had a specific weight allowance (no dropship can hold and unlimited amount of tonnage).
Why not have weight allowances in a draft pick lobby system, where players take turns choosing mechs based on rank. To rate the players mwo could use an elo system. For example in an 8 v 8 you could have a 400 ton weight limit. Each player could pick a 50 ton mech, if all wanted to have max weight. If the player in the #1 slot picks a 100 ton, and then #2 picks a 60 ton, #3 feilds a 40 ton, ect. The weight allowances get lower as the players pick, assuming the players pick the heaviest mech available. This echos the lore, the best pilots got the heaviest mechs as they're the most expensive investments. Do we let new recuits in the navy take command of carriers?
I will add that this suggestion is only intended to try to help think of ways that mwo could become a more strategic game within a ranked setting, the way it works now is fine for casual playing but I would really like to see this awsome game become more then just a timesink, one that could reward its players for tactics and forethought, other then just a cool free to play. I've been a mechwarrior fan for many years, and am only asking for more depth in one of my favorite games.

The idea of the author is interesting, and i had a similar one, but this one has something a bit wrong imo. You're not supposed to fight in order to play with a given class AFTER you launched the matchmaking. Simply, the machmaking should address players to game rooms where their role is needed.

you can't build a matchmaking system based on what your friends do and assumptions, i believe :D Terms need to be way more generic and game features based, not on personal user habits.
I do like Rex Zero concept! :)
