There was ever really one true Clan and it's name was Wolverine.

Sadly it's awesomeness was so superior, it's light so bright, that all the other 19 clans (at the time) conspired to snuff them out. In the end the Clans started a precedent that has continued ever since...they failed.

All the Clans have ever been able to do since was to dwindle their own numbers further and lose to Quasi-Religious Monks who pray to transmitters before turning them on.

Seriously, a Warrior society bred through Eugenics and armed with the most advanced technology lost to a bunch of green pilots out on their first live-fire action. Only Clan Wolf wasn't a total embarrassment and it's 'rising star' is a captured inner sphere 'Freebirth'.

Sarah McEvedy saw the writing on the wall and got most of her troops the heck out of Dodge. (In case you don't already know, let me save you a trip to Sarna.net. McEvedy was the Khan of Clan Wolverine and the commanding officer of the 331st Royal BattleMech Division before that. Where she took them and what they did is still anyone's guess.)

psst- minnesota tribe... :)

Heh, tell that to the Draconis Combine, their coffers were lightened in the brief time they encountered them. :)
Anything more about the Tribe is sadly speculation, or thankfully nothing more since I don't buy that nonsense of them becoming Word of Blakists. Seriously, that one ranks up there with faking the moon landing.

There was only the four originally, Steel Viper were a reserve clan, before Leo Showers death, they were called up by Ghost Bear to play baby sitter for planets they'd already conquered and nothing more...

'Clan Steel Vipers for all you Security Guard needs.'

So how much blueblood flows through the Eugenics programs? Don't you need a few hundred thousand to prevent repetition of... ahem... in-laws?

Hint: The ComGuards weren't green, and the Minnesota Tribe would like a word with you.

Edit: beat me to the punch >_> ;)

Then in General Discussion, all the Dev's have managed to do is dwindle the player base even further and lose to a bunch of Quasi-religious nerds who pray before every drop (that they'll have a HUD ;)).

Also, can we start our own subclans? Like, Clan Wheezing Rabbit, Clan Arrogant Badger, Clan Flaccid Underpants?

How about Clan Plaid Apricot? Clan Angry Hairdresser?

I support any and all badger themed clans

Okay, serious discussion is serious.

First of all, the other Clans _were_ referenced in the fluff earlier in the lore, meaning they might have been created about the same time. For example, in reading the "Blood of Kerensky" series, you see reference to multiple, MULTIPLE Clans, even going so far as to name the Clans fighting in the Trial of Possession on Tukkayyid (for reference, the Clans who participated on Tukkayyid are Ghost Bear, Steel Viper, Jade Falcon, Wolf, Smoke Jaguar, Nova Cat, and Diamond Shark). In addition, if you've ever played MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat, the Codex actually gives a BUNCH of information regarding each Clan, so even as far back as 1995 (roughly when you started playing, I assume), there was information about them.

Once again, I state that Sarna is your friend on this. You can find more information in these links.

A little fluff to bracket the serious discussion ;-)

The ones with the best sounding names. Coincidence?

It doesn't really seem like the kind of resource that would provide meta-information in an accessible (out-of-universe) format.

Stuff like "when was this clan created, not by Kerensky, but by the real human beings who wrote this stuff?".

Battletech was originally published in '84, Stackpole first wrote a book about it in '89.

I'd say there's plenty of room time wise for, "We need more cultish religious orders to lump and explain the failings of Catholicism the Clans during the Great Schism Great Exodus that..."

I'd love to see someone get dirty on the publication dates, and show us when Clan Diamond Fox and Clan Honey Badger were first mentioned.

Clan Honey Badger doesn't care. It just takes what it wants.

Clan Invasion

The Clan Invasion (known to the Clans as Operation Revival) refers to the massive Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere, commencing with the arrival of Clans Jade Falcon, Wolf, Ghost Bear, and Smoke Jaguar in the near, coreward Periphery (The Rift and The Draconian Drift) in August, 3049. The Clan Invasion would continue for two and one-half years, and increase in scope to include three more Invading Clans, but would end with the the Battle of Tukayyid in June, 3052.

Overview

Following the death of ilKhan Leo Showers over Radstadt in 3050, "reserve" Clans Steel Viper and Nova Cat were added ostensibly to "aid" the efforts of Clans Jade Falcon and Smoke Jaguar, while a seventh Clan, Clan Diamond Shark, did not mobilize in time to "aid" Clan Ghost Bear. However, the additions of these reserve Clans were actually meant to hinder the progress by Clan Wolf's rivals, a machination by newly-elected ilKhan Ulric Kerensky of Clan Wolf. In fact, Clans Steel Viper and Nova Cat were intentionally assigned to invasion corridors already assigned to bitter rivals.

Quote

In the Trials to determine who would participate in the invasion, Clan Goliath Scorpion was left out of the initial wave, although they were able to take advantage of the situation. With so many units away from the homeworlds on their Crusade, many Seekers began searching through areas previously considered too heavily-defended. SaKhan Posavatz himself was nearly killed on the Smoke Jaguar world of Tranquil during one such raid, barely escaping from a terrible battle outside the city of Blood River. He would later win a Trial of Possession against Clan Steel Viper in 3049 for the right to accompany them into the Inner Sphere, taking with him his retinue and a Star of 'Mechs.

Four Clans were involved in the initial invasion (Clans Jade Falcon, Wolf, Ghost Bear, and Smoke Jaguar).

Three reserved Clans were called up (Clans Steel Viper, Nova Cat and Clan Diamond Shark), but, Clan Diamond Shark never mobilized in time.

The seventh Clan is Clan Goliath Scorpion . They would win the right to have a retinue and a star of Mechs accompany the Steel Vipers.

I'd imagine the initial invasion Clans were the first one named when the idea originated, so they got the names that really jumped out. The rest were certainly a case of "ok, now we need 16 more names." But FASA had a dedication to continuity to put Trekkies to shame, so I'd say they were almost certainly all named and at least partially fleshed out, before any official word of the Clans ever reached the public.

I could be wrong, but it's just the way they did things.
