MC isn't earned, it's bought with real cash. Xp you should be earning and if you check under the Pilot tab you can search for the chassis you're piloting to see how much xp you have. You must have the mech selected in the list. General XP (which is what you see on the main page of the mechlab) is earned at a slower rate. Mech XP is per chassis so if you're piloting for instance a Centurion CN9-A you will not see any mech xp on a Centurion CN9-AL. Hope that clears it up a bit for you.

C-bills are in-game cash and can be used to buy mech and equipment. There are just a few variants (called "Hero" and "Champion" mechs) that can be bought with MC only.

You can buy most 'Mechs with just ingame currency. MC are only required for Hero and Champion 'Mechs.

You should be earning c-bills, which you can use to buy all the standard non-hero variants. You should also have a cadet bonus for your first 25 games, which should earn you around 9 million C-Bills or so. Basically enough to buy a single assault mech, or a couple smaller mechs.

You can buy each mech beside the hero and champion mechs with MC or Credits.
Credits are gained by playing. At the end of each match you should see how much credits and XP you got. There is a second tab on the window at the end. With your personal data.
For your first 20 matches you will get a great credit boost. This was done so player can buy their first mech way earlier. So just do these matches, and check a few more, how much credits you gain. After this you can decide yourself how long and if you want to wait to buy your first mech. All further credits will go into this mech for some long time (for upgrades and weapons). So decide well what mech you want to use. You will have to use it for some time .
You can always as well use the trial mechs. Even when you have your own mech. So it will not be this boring, and you dont have to use the same mech all the time.
XP on the other hand is a different part. You gain XP for each mech you pilot. And a few % of these XP go to the Global XP. Global XP can be used for every mech and for the pilot modules. So i would not waste these on mechs.
All other, normal XP, is bound to the mech, and can only be used for this mech. You gain these, but you cant see it untill you bought the mech.
