I've been playing a few months now and just wanted to share something I learned the HARD WAY with those just joining the game and thinking about getting their first mech. I strongly playing with the trial mechs long enough for the variety to change a couple of times so you get a better idea of the type you're comfortable with. Once you decide whether you appreciate speed, long-lasting armor or intimidating firepower and what mix suits you, heed a couple of notions;
1. Watch the obvious teams and 4 man units you play against. See at the end of the game what mechs they're fielding. There are some mechs and variants that don't seem to work at all in more competitive team play, and since this is primarily a team game, you want to make your first purchases ones you will find accepted in the team you join.
Specifically Commandos aren't in favor now. Jenners may have a role if the speed cap comes off and BAP changes are implemented, but not yet. Hold off for now. If you're a light aficionado, the Raven 3l is still the preferred chassis. Spiders can do well but it's better to have that 3L handy.
Mediums are usually Centurion A and D models. They're fast, durable and can substitute as scouts if needed. Trebuchets are acceptable but not as durable, though the Jump Jets are an advantage if you work well in them.
Heavies are Cataphract 3D with Jump Jets preferred territory. Dragons may find a home if the collision comes back, but until then Cataphracts are heavier, better armed and can do well in long range sniping as well as hold their own in a brawl if they stay on the outside.
Assaults used to be the AS7D-DC's realm, but the Highlanders with Jets and reasonable armor are seeing more gameplay. The Awesome is too easy to take down because of its torso, and the Stalkers though impressive are better suited for a support role with their limited torso twist.
2. Understand that in many groups they will tolerate divergence but only within limits. It's better to talk or watch for the mechs that teams are using than join with a barrage full of mechs they won't want I know. I have quite a few mechs and variants I would sell but I can't trust the changes PGI envisions before the Big Game won't make them viable in the future.
3. Check the forums for build advice, but DON'T SELLANYTHING until you join your group!
You never know what you'll need!
Best of Luck!
