Speed matching is a feature that I've only ever seen included in flight simulators, but as MWO is a simulator I feel it would be right at home.

To clarify, this feature would allow you to match the speed of a friendly Mech (assuming your Mech can physically match that speed. ie no 113kph Atlases). This would allow Lances to stick together by actually going as fast as their slowest member. This feature would not be an autopilot that would follow the other Mech (although that feature could be interesting).

With my play style I stick close to Assault Mechs to provide close support. This means that I have to continually watch my speed and distance to make sure I'm not passing and leaving my Lance mate/ running into my Lance mate/ falling behind my Lancemate. This is time that would be much better spent watching for hostiles and communicating with the team.

The feature would be simple enough to use:
1: Look at/target friendly Mech you wish to match speed with
2: Press button (whatever key is assigned to 'Match Speed')
3: Speed is matched

Manually adjusting your speed at any point would disable Match Speed until it was reengaged

Hate to be a downer but

Matching speed is so easy in this game....

If everyone sticks with the slowest mech it takes about 2 seconds to find that sweet spot

This might be cool but it would be on the bottom of the list of features we need

My thing is that, over a short period of time, the minute differences in speed affect your position with the other Mech fairly noticeably. It may just be a pet peeve of mine, but it would be simple to implement and can only improve group coordination and cohesiveness.

It's not hard to figure out the speed to match, if you have driven the chassis before. Smurfy's mechlab is also good for showing the potential speeds of which all mechs are run... so this isn't actually necessary.

A quick type in chat: " hey X what is your speed?" solves the problem if you are unsure. This game is too easy as it is, adding features to make it even easier is actually a step AWAY from the sim experience.
