Killed By An Ammo Explosion - Though I Only Have Gauss?

Gauss ammo is metal slugs that don't explode.
However, in a match just now, the death screen said I was ''killed by an ammo explosion''.
Any idea on how this could be?
---
Does a Gauss explosion get called an ''ammo explosion''? If so, would putting CASE in the location of the Gauss rifle stop death by Gauss explosion?
I'd appreciate your advice, thanks.

Yes, this is the weapon itself exploding. Simply the wrong text. You can of course add Case if you want, but as it only stops the damage from spreading its not of much use on most builds.

Yes, the gauss rifle is causing the explosion. As this is handled as an ammo explosion, case should help.

Thanks guys.
I have an XL engine, and the gauss rifle is in my Left Torso. If I put CASE in that location, would it stop the exploding gauss from destroying my XL engine?
(I've never been sure how the 'exploding components' mechanic works when it comes to XL engines. Perhaps if the Left Torso is already at the point where the gauss rifle has been destroyed, then the XL engine has already gone kaboom too?)

CASE has no use with XL engines.

No.
Case only prevents damaged from gauss or ammo explosion transfering from the side torso to the centre torso. Anything in the side torsos will be damaged by an ammo or gauss explosion. If your side torso is destroyed, so is your xl engine.

See Above... and also the FAQ/Search.
Case only prevents damage from going to a different location. The location of the explosion will still be Destroyed. In this case, your XL engine will be toast and so will your mech.
In the real game, case would still limit your repair bill making it easier to fix the mech in a campaign but serves no purpose in this version.

Gauss + case is not supposed to work but it does... Check atlas k standard config...
This the same like streaks getting faster locks with artemis.. Not supposed to work but it does...

many "canon" loadouts pair CASE with an XL engine, solely to limit the destruction and save on repair costs. As RnR is no longer part of MWO, the first thing you should do if using an XL engine is remove the case, as there is no benefit.
And FYI the ammo explosion does not necessarily destroy the location. In very rare cases (and heavy-assault 'mechs) the ammo bin will be almost empty (like an AC10 bin with 1 shot left, or the last reload for your SRM4) that will not do enough damage to destroy the location.

Its also nice that MWO has double (+) the armor/internal values as normal, so it makes ammo explosions a lot less deadly.

Just verifying that you didn't have any AMS ammo, cause that will explode as well.

If you have a gauss in your side-torso with an XL engine, nothing can save you. However, if you case the gauss in an arm, it will contain the explosion to the arm, and you cna safely run an XL.
